"Dawlish Warren has a lot more than appears to offer, firstly is the tourist attraction comprizing of holiday parks, cafes and restaurants, amuzements and golden sandy beaches. Secondly is all the history behind the smooth exterior. Befoere the first world war golfing enthusuasts use to travel from all over the south west of England to meet up here and play the popular pastime as the course here proves to be quite a challenge to even the best golfers. Up until 1905 alot of the Warren used to be wasteland that is until Great Western Railways saw the potential and decided to build their first platform here. Dawlish Warren hasnt had it easy though because to a bay like nature since the early 1900's the strong winds caused regular flooding with buildings being grounded. In september of 1960 the last of the original buildings was destroyed again by severe flooding, so everything you see today is less than 50 years old. Since then the sea walls and defences have been raised and other than the storm of 1990 there has been no more flooding. The Warren also has been home to many famous writers and artists including the entertainer Tommy Cooper. So next time you visit Dawlish Warren take time out to think about the history hidden by one small towns decor, and dont forget to try the homemade scones and clotted cream from the old bakery."
