"Weymouth is full of fantastic themed and trendy pubs, but sometimes I get the urge to visit a 'normal' pub where I can sit down and enjoy a drink without worrying about whether my clothes are the height of fashion. The Sun Inn, just opposite Weymouth Beach, is one of those pubs.

This is a very traditional pub and the décor inside reminds me of the kind of country pubs which I sometimes visit in Stratford-Upon-Avon and places like that. The Sun Inn is very light and airy inside, thanks to large windows and beautiful pastel walls. The fabulous pine tables and bar area completes the transformation from 'Seaside Pub' to 'Country-Style Pub'. It's a refreshing change in a resort like Weymouth to find such a basically pretty pub.

The atmosphere in this pub is lovely. It seems to be passed by by the tourists and it's obvious that the majority of drinkers are using this pub as their local, this makes for a friendly group of people and there's no clickiness like you sometimes find in these kind of pubs. In fact we got chatting to a local couple and they gave us some suggestions of things to do and see during our stay in Weymouth, including a phone number for a white rafting event which my partner showed an interest in. Lovely people.

The Sun Inn does a small range of pub meals for very reasonable prices. We both ate Fish & Chips which was absolutely delicious, the fish was wonderfully fresh and the chips had that wonderful fluffy homemade texture. The batter on the fish was divine; light and crispy with no more than a hint of greasiness – just as battered fish should be! The meal was served with a fresh crispy green salad and peas and cost just £3.99, which is brilliant value considering most of the chippy's in Weymouth charge this (and more!) for a standard take-away fish and chips.

There's definitely a 'pub grub' theme to the menu with all your favourite dishes to choose from. Lasagne, scampi, pie and other traditional pub meals are available; all available served with either chips, jacket or boiled potatoes. I watch a couple of builders devouring a roast chicken dinner and it looked gorgeous (the food, not the builders!), the chicken portion was so large that I could barely see the potatoes, veg and stuffing even when I walked straight past their table!

For dessert I had a lovely slice of apple pie which was rich with a gorgeous cinnamon aftertaste. This was served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and as the pie was warm to ice cream melted into a delicious vanilla sauce. Fabulous.

The bar in The Sun Inn serves all the usual lagers, spirits and alcopops and has a very good wine list. Drinks prices are reasonable, slightly cheaper than most pubs in the surrounding area for the majority of their brands. I noticed the spirits were a few pence more expensive than the pub we'd visited the previous day, but they made up for this by charging just £1.95 for a pint of lager while other Weymouth pubs charge over £2. There's also no charge for a dash of lime, which is worth a mention because a lot of pubs charge you upwards of 20p when you want it in your lager. You can buy wine by the glass or the bottle, with heft savings to be had by purchasing a full bottle.

Staff in The Sun Inn are brilliant; extremely friendly and helpful with really nice personalities. I got the feeling that nothing was too much trouble for them, and they were knowledgeable about the meals available and also knew the local area well.

Seating arrangements are nicely varied in here; those of you who are planning to have a meal have a choice of table sizes, and if you're just going for a drink you can either sit on one of the comfortable bar stools or relax in a puffy chair – I had to get out of the chair and perch on a bar stool after nearly falling asleep on the ultra comfy chair! Mark was impressed with the dart board as he'd suffered withdrawal symptoms in Weymouth because there isn't a dart board in sight in most of the pubs!

The Sun Inn also offers accommodation in one of five non-smoking rooms. I didn't stay here so can't comment on the service or costs, but I popped my head into one of the rooms and it was lovely. Nicely decorated with the same country style as the bar downstairs, very bright and relaxing looking.

Wheelchair access is good as the pub has a wide doorway and there is plenty of space to get around in the bar and eating area, there is no disabled toilet but the ladies loo's were spacious enough to get a wheelchair around inside.

To find The Sun Inn (and you'll want to) simply walk along Weymouth Beach as far as the Jubilee Clock, then cross the road and look for the colourful sun pub sign which will lead you to this lovely little pub.
