"We took my 2 children , age 7 and 10 here one day last month and a great day out was had by all, it was very interesting, fact finding and enjoyable. Even though the weather was horrid outside there was plenty to do indoors, so a great day out for all conditions.

This museum provides an opportunity to go 140 metres underground down one of the countries oldest working mines. It provides an insight in the lives of working miners through the ages. The tour guides are actually ex-miners which adds to the authenticity of the place.

As this is a real coal mine warm clothes and sensible flat shoes are recommended and children must be accompanied by an adult.

There is an age limit for children to go underground which is 5 years but there is 'Mini Miners' indoor play area for those not old enough

The underground tour is accessible for wheelchair users

For homemade meals and snacks there is a lovely café

The museum is open daily from 10 am until 5pm with the last underground tour being at 315pm and admission is free. It is very easy to find being on the A642 halfway between Wakefield and Huddersfield with easy sign-posted access from the M1 and there is a free car park

You can also book education visits with packs and workshops if you are from a school doing a school trip

Well worth a visit !!"
