A VISIT TO YORK

"I have always been impressed with what York has to offer since being an adult. Maybe not such a good place to take kids because they tire easily, although a must holiday for people who have grown past that, an adult break away from all things that attract children.

York as a city is very historical, and the experience would not be complete without visiting The Shambles, which is the older part of the town, with rambling cobble streets and a "Yesteryear" atmosphere. The little shops come pretty close to my visions of "The Old Curiosity Shop", and little alleyways take you through this rambling part of the City that pulls you into atmosphere and history, all at the same time.

Places to visit are varied, but all what I consider to be grown up activities, starting with the fabulous Museum. I actually am not keen on being bored out of my mind, but this museum is special. There is a street set out as it would have been in old times, and this to me makes the whole visit a worthwhile experience. One word of warning. Those who are less capable of walking might wish to avoid the trappings of York, as you really will walk your feet off.

The city wall that surrounds the City is a must visit. Here you take the lesser trodden path that takes you from one gate of the city to another, looking down upon the city and the gardens, and for me this is a breath of fresh air amidst the fury of modern life.

The Minster itself is impressive and well worthy of a visit, and the leaded glass and stonework amazing.

Lastly, do not forget the railway museum. Okay, you may not like trains much, but you cannot help be overwhelmed when you enter the royal carriages and see how the rich travelled back in the olden days.
