"Location
Take the A593 from Ambleside. At Skelwith Bridge, turn right onto the B5343.
There is a layby on the left just as the valley opens up. Its good to stop there and drink in the view. You have a spectacular view of the pikes and the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, as well as the valley. There is also a convenient fence to sit on for family and friends pics! (I know I have plenty).
The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is about six miles down this road. There is a large National Trust Campsite on the left. If you can see that then turn right into the pub car-park.
What can you do there?
Personally, the first thing I do is lob up a tent and make sure my bed is made in the nearby campsite (Just trust me - you won't want to drive home).
I think the current charges are £4.50 per night per adult, £2.50 per night per child, £2.50 per night per car, and £1.00 per night per dog. No campfires, but barbeques are allowed. It's cheaper and less time consuming than finding a taxi back to Ambleside.
Besides, one night won't be enough!
The next thing is to go in and order your pint. Once you've done that you will get sucked into the wonderful atmosphere that the pub emanates. I can't really describe it. It's all a pub should be. Roaring fire, good beer, local folklore, good beer, good music, good beer, friendly and diverse beer drinkers, good beer!!!"
