"I stayed here with my son and my best friend and her two children. We wanted to stay somewhere in between Lightwater Valley and The Life Science Museum in Newcastle to visit these 2 places on my sons birthday weekend (I settled for Piercebridge because he's called Pierce, it seemed appropriate!).
The George is a 16th Century riverside coaching inn based at the entrance to the Yorkshire Dales. I was a bit worried it was too upmarket for 3 rowdy children (and 2 rowdy adults) but they were fantastic with us.
The restaurant was beautiful and the menu was aimed at fine dining, but they happily offered us children friendly options that weren't on the menu. I had brought a birthday cake with me and the Manager was more than happy to serve that for us and even joined in when we sang 'happy birthday', much to the surprise of the other guests!
Nothing was too much trouble, which made a special birthday weekend all the more enjoyable.
The rooms were warm and clean, and the beds extremely comfortable. There was a bar area with pool tables as well, but we didn't venture into that part.
The children will remember Piercebridge and the Inn for a long time, I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a base in that area.
