"Every holiday in the UK has at least one rainy day and our stay in Devon was no exception! Rather than lurk about in the caravan though we decided this wold be a good time to visit Kents Cavern. I had seen it on the internet and wasn't sure how much fun it would be for an 8 year old boy and his 31 year old Mum!

It made a good first impression as you wait in the gift shop for your tour to begin (clever people those cavern owners!) and the items on sale were actually quite original and good value.

You are then taken on a guided tour of the caves themselves. Our tour guide was enigmatic and clearly loved his subject. The caves himself are just fascinating, although it's hard to explain why exactly, they're just so still and impressive. There's far more colour down there than you would imagine, and lots of beautiful patterns in the rocks. They are very cleverly lit in places as well showing off all the strange shapes caused by stalacmites and stalactites (apologies if that's not how you spell it).
The tour lasted about 45 minutes and my son enjoyed it very much. Some of the much younger children on the tour did get a little bored though which made the guides job harder. The web site will tell you it's not cold down there but I was freezing! Wrap up well.
You come out of the caves to the Red Rock Cafe which was superb.
We really enjoyed ourselves, and to cap it all it had stopped raining when we emerged!
