"After a second day of heavy snow I didn't feel like dragging myself up to Tesco to buy some stuff for tonight's dinner, so I waited for my fella to get back then got him to take me to a local fish & chip shop to grab a take away.

The Classic Fish Bar in Kingstanding is, quite simply, one of the best chippy's I've ever used. Its prices are fantastic and the quality of the food is unbeatable; I've used the chippy many times in the past, but knowing I was going to come home and write a recommendation on the place made me take that little bit more notice of the shop.

Classic sells a full range of staple chip shop food, as well as a good selection of 'nibbles' such as samosa's, shesh kebab, onion bahjee and other spicy goodies to munch after you've eaten your traditional English fish & chips.

The menu is pretty extensive for such a small chippy; they serve all the food you'd find in a larger take away such as fish, sausage, roe, saveloys etc… as well as a fantastic range of doner kebab meals, burgers and Pukka pies. You can also swap normal chunky chips for fries or potato scallops which adds a bit of variety to your meal.

Food is without fail delicious from Classic and I've never had cause to complain about anything I've bought from here. The chips are wonderful and have that gorgeous and distinctive chippy taste, which just begs for tonnes of salt and vinegar to be added to them. I love the fact that when I order a bag of chips I'll get more or less a full portion of 'proper' chips without all those flaky crunchy little bits which hurt my gums and make me feel sick. Of course, some of you will love these crunchy chips but I don't so Classic's chips are perfect for me! The fries are also great, you need to order these when you enter the chippy as they're not cooked in advance but its well worth the 10 minute or so wait as they're so tasty.

Another thing which I adore from Classic is the spicy potatoes; this is basically a full size peeled potato coated in a delicious Southern fried coating and cooked until the spud is soft and fluffy. I'll sometimes have these potatoes instead of chips with my fish, and have been known to eat not only a bag of chips but two large spicy potatoes too! They're so moreish and I'd love the recipe, although have never plucked up the courage to ask! The potatoes are piled in a separate servery which also houses chicken nibbles (tiny wee chicken legs in a Southern fried coating) and large chicken breasts stuffed with cheese and bacon or a delicious mushroom sauce.

Classic has a brilliant selection of long term special offers; with mini fish & chips costing just £1.25, sausage & chips in a tray being 99p and a pie with a full size portion of chips will set you back just £1.50. The size of these cheaper meals is brilliant and unless you're absolutely starving it's well worth buying from this Special Offer menu and saving yourself a few quid. Another brilliant buy is the kebab meat and chips, where you get a full size portion of chips with loads of kebab meat for £1.25 – you can also add salad and chilli sauce to your meal for no extra cost.

My fella regularly has a Doner Kebab Naan from this chippy which is absolutely massive and consists of a large naan bread literally filled to bursting with tangy kebab meat and salad – this is such a big meal that you really don't need chips with it and just ONE of these naan's has literally fed Mark and both of our kids, which makes it (at just £2.50) a bargain! I like the Doner Kebab Wraps which is basically a soft tortilla wrapped around loads of kebab meat with as much (or little) salad as you like, this is I think slightly on the pricey side at £2 but it really is delicious and will fill you up for ages.

Of course, if you don't want a full meal you can opt for a cone of chips which costs 50p and will be served in a standard size polystyrene cone – my seven year old loves walking down the road with a cone of chips in this cold weather as she says it keeps her hands warm! The usual curry sauce, mushy peas and chilli sauces are available for 50p a pot and you'll be asked when you complete your order if you want anything of this nature.

Staff in Classic are really friendly and helpful, packing your meals into a bag before taking the money and always have a friendly word to say to the kids'. Some of them don't speak brilliant English, but your order will always be fulfilled correctly as they will check and double check with you before getting your food ready.

The chippy is extremely clean and Classic employs a couple of guys whose main role seems to be constantly wiping surfaces and cleaning the floor and serveries. The food is always cooked to an excellent standard; even the chicken (notorious for being pink in chip shops) is thoroughly cooked with the meat literally falling off the bone when you tuck in.

Disabled access is fine. The doorway is wide enough to get a standard wheelchair in, although the counter is fairly high so you may feel slightly out of place when you come to place your order. I have, however, seen wheelchair users in Classic and the staff will lean over the counter to make sure they hear your order correctly and also pass you your food down so you won't need to struggle to reach your bag of munch.

So, if you live locally to North Birmingham or are passing through stop off at the Classic Fish Bar – I promise you won't be disappointed and you'll end up with a full belly AND a full wallet! It's located on one of the main roads connecting Birmingham City Centre to other areas of North Birmingham so is easily within reach if you're travelling through Birmingham to get onto the Midlands motorway network. Classic is open from 11am - midnight, and often closes later if there is a big queue.

From the City Centre you simply drive in a dead straight line (straight on at all islands and traffic lights) until you get to an area signposted Perry Common, when you see this sign it means you're on College Road and the chippy is located about 200 yards away on your left hand side. Parking is good as there is lots of space on the road to leave your car for the few minutes you'll be inside Classic, or alternatively there's a large Aldi car park within a minutes walk from the chippy. As far as buses go, the 107 and 7 from Birmingham City Centre and North Birmingham in general will drop you off practically outside Classic – so you've really no excuse not to try out this fabulous chippy, have you?
