"My partner and I first moved to Burnley a little over two years ago on Good Friday. We decided to venture out into our new home town and soon found ourselves stumbling in and out of many of the pubs on the fringe of Burnley 's annual Blues Festival.
Burnley Blues Festival originated in 1988 and has now established itself as a major annual event in the British blues calendar. Each year the festival attracts both musicians and fans from all over the world. It has even been twinned with Chicago 's annual Blues Festival and is believed by some to be one of the best in the country.
Now, I have to admit that I am not an expert when it comes to Rhythm and Blues music but I can appreciate a good atmosphere, good music and good beer. For Blues aficionados, you may want to head over to Burnley Mechanics on Manchester road. This is where the festival's 'headliners' perform. However, you can still enjoy the festival without even paying for tickets by venturing around the 'fringe.'
During the weeks leading up to and during the festival, most pubs in Burnley will have free festival fringe brochures which gives details of what bands are playing around the outskirts of the town centre. Pubs including the Sparrowhawk Hotel, the Talbot Hotel, the Inn on the Wharf, the Bridge Bier Huis and many more get into the swing of things with free music and a cracking atmosphere. Even if, like me, you don't know the difference between BB King and Bukka White, you'll enjoy a fantastic knees-up and you'll soon find yourself singing along to songs you didn't even realise you knew!
Burnley Blues Festival is held every year, usually on or around Easter weekend. The Burnley Mechanics website is a great place to check for updates on next year's festival and you can visit on http://www.burnleymechanics.co.uk/blues.php"
