"Having been turned away from the Barbican Kitchen as it was fully booked, my partner and I agreed on a Chinese meal during our recent stay in Plymouth. As we pondered between the two Chinese restaurants situated on Southside Street in the Barbican area of town, a passer-by pointed to Hans Oriental Cuisine and told us that it's the best Chinese restaurant in Plymouth. And so our minds were made up and we ventured in.
At the entrance, a smartly dressed waitress equipped with a futuristic looking headset informed the staff upstairs of our arrival and escorted us up. The doors to the restaurant were opened before we even reached them and we were quickly settled at a table.
The restaurant itself has a contemporary feel and was very relaxed. The menu was extensive and I feel I should mention that the complimentary prawn crackers went down nicely with a few glasses of the house white.
We chose a mixed started for two which was a generous size and the selection was enough to give us an idea of the quality of the food. Both my partner and I enjoyed our main courses although I have to say, neither of us were blown away by the food.
I, being greedy, also opted for a pudding from the dessert menu which was comprised of assorted Italian themed ice cream creations and by the time we had finished the meal we had supped our way through two bottles of the Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine itself was quite reasonably priced at about £14 per bottle and the total cost of the meal was just short of £70.
Whilst it was a little on the pricey side, I do feel the atmosphere and high quality of service at Hans made the meal worth it and I'm sure we'll pop in again next time we're in the vicinity."
