"For a few years now my chums and I have always liked to go for a drink at the pub every weekend for a bit of a chat. We have tried a few pubs but the one that remains our favourite is The Railway.
Situated in the middle of Station Road in Pelsall it is rather a small pub that many people would walk right past without even noticing it. This is one of its charms, the cosy atmosphere inside where you really feel as if you can sit down and enjoy yourself for a few hours.
Location
As previously mentioned The Railway is located in Pelsall which is a small village a few miles north of Walsall in the West Midlands. The pub is out of the way in the middle of Station Road, however you can see it from the main road across the common. It is in a lovely location as from the windows in the pub you can see the whole common, trees and part of Pelsall. It is all very green so it has 5 stars in my book for views and location.
Inside
Most people would not think much of this pub as it is very old fashioned inside. As you walk inside it does feel as if you are in a time warp, going back to the fifties. I don't mean by the actual furnishings (although they aren't modern at all!) but by the atmosphere of the pub. To me it feels like a pub that my Grandad would have gone to with his friends for a pint. Although I think it's nice to have somewhere to go to that hasn't conformed and changed into neutral colours and modern art. Instead it sticks with old bar stools and leather booths surrounded by old pictures of trains.
The Railway however has conformed a little as it has a modern jukebox and a games machine. It also has a large plasma television which comes in handy when a major sports game is on. There is also a darts board for anyone who dares to play, and lose terribly like I do.
The bar is situated in the middle of the pub with one side as the bar, so a place to socialise, drink and have some fun while the other side is the lounge. This is the primary place for eating meals and people who want a bit of quiet in their evening. This factor I like best about this pub as you have a choice about what kind of evening you want.
The toilets I can't really find much to talk about other than that they are ordinary pub toilets; however what I can say is that they are always clean and fresh which is nice.
The service
One thing you are always guaranteed at The Railway is friendly service. The manager is always lovely and never misses the opportunity for a chat. They always have a smile on their faces and answer whatever questions you may have about drinks and there prices. They are very efficient in what they do, I find that I am never waiting for more than 5 minutes before I am served and glasses are always swept up very quickly. Another thing I like about the service there is that they always ask for ID from patrons they think look too young. It always bugs me when you see kids who look 12 getting drinks as I think it is a downfall of society. This place however always asks and if one is not provided they will not serve them and ask them to leave.
The food
The Railway also serves meals in the day up until about 8 o'clock at night. They serve a variety of pub food such as sandwiches, burgers, steak, chips and curries. They also serve some pretty good desserts such as brownies and ice cream. The food is pretty mediocre, a standard for normal pubs. But it is quite cheap. I had a burger and chips for £3.50 that tasted alright. For a quick meal if you're out for the night and your hungry but don't expect any Michelin stars coming its way.
The price for drinks is pretty standard, what you would get anywhere really. I drink coke quite often and its £1.20 for half a pint which isn't bad considering what other places charge. Most singles will cost about £1.80 with doubles at around £2.60 and a pint of beer or larger will usually cost in the region of £2.80. So not bad prices, for a night out it can be pretty cheap if your driving but if your drinking you can still have a pretty good night from £20 with some change left over.
The Railway is open on weekends till quite late. Last orders are usually around 11 till 11.30 however management won't chuck you out until the early hours of the morning if you really want a long night out.
Atmosphere
I like the atmosphere in The Railway, it is always filled with down to earth people who you can chat to quite easily even if you've never met them before. I must say that this place is not for everyone especially as it's seen as more of a student pub now on the weekends. If you want a modern pub then this is definitely not the place for you, but if its something a little more old school, friendly and down to earth then this is the place for you.
Overall I love this pub and try to frequent it most weekends. It's a good place to sit with some friends, have a drink, relax and have a good night. The service is friendly, the drinks are fairly priced and you're sure of no young idiots coming in. So I recommend The Railway to people who prefer a quiet evening with friends."
