"I found out about this place from a recommendation from a friend and it is fab. Located in the centre of Huddersfiled in St Georges Square it is directly across from the railway station. I had been previously when it was Mas Bar and restaurant and had been very disappointed it is now under new management with the new name On The Square. The concept of On the Square according to their web site is quality, fine dining at affordable prices to Huddersfield town centre. The style is be modern British food with a Mediterranean twist serving only fresh and local produce when possible. This was exactly what I felt we got.
The design is very modern with with hard stone floors and leather seat with strong coloured paint on the wall and decorative lighting arrangement. It feels very clean with and the place had a lovely feel to it.
I feel it must mention the service at first we had a waitress who quite frankly was dam right scary. I can honestly say her manner was rude and aggressive and she terrified half of our party. I felt she was barking orders at us when ordering it was very off putting. She left thankfully about half an hour into out visit then the staff we go couldn't have been more friendly or helpful going the extra mile and tiding up rubbish we had made with our present opening. The were very nice and we were thankfully of that. There is also a 10 percent service charge on parties over 6 which had our original waitress stayed we would have paid very begrudgingly. But maybe she was just stressed after a hard day.
Now lets get to the food. I have the Christmas special menu which I felt was amazing value at 17.50 for 3 courses. I started with carrot and orange soap which came with crusty bread and it was delicious, and a large serving of soap which I was unable to finish. For the main course I had chicken in a Stilton sauce which was so tender it melted in your mouth. For the dessert I had chocolate mousse which white chocolate sauce which was heavenly. I was very nicely presented although I wasn't a big fan of the Hungarian gooseberry that came with it which I found slightly random but I was a lovely pudding. The whole meal was great and I felt well and truly stuffed afterwards. What I did find really nice was that we weren't rushed at all and they were happy for us to remain at out table for sometime after our meal. We were booked in at 7.30 and left after 10.30 and had a very relaxed evening amongst friends with out pressure to hurry.
Just a note it is possible to park at the train station after six for free as well as on the side streets nearby.
