"Caudwell's Mill in Rowsley near Matlock, Derbyshire is a pleasant attraction to visit and somewhat fascinating to those who are interesting in milling machinery, old and new.
Cauldwell's Mill is a grade 2 listed Mill which is powered by the river Wye. The Mill is 400 years old and is still in operation, milling flour. There are various elements to a trip to the Mill. For £3.60 per adult and £2.50 for children, you can explore the Mill and learn about how wheat is turned into flour. I found this fascinating and our children enjoyed watching the mechanical features in operation. There is also various displays and exhibits as your tour the Mill which demonstrate early science and technology. The Country Parlour cafe offers a large variety of food and beverages and actively promotes fair trade products. We indulged in a generous portion of chocolate cake (freshly made) which I highly recommend! The windows of the cafe overlook the sweeping countryside, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the scenery. I was told by the staff that there is a nature trail next to the Mill which is ideal to walk off the cakes! The Mill has a lovely gift shop with a wide variety of gifts and souvenirs. The prices are very reasonable too. There is also a shop where you can buy all types of flour and oats etc in large or small quantities. The gallery has some spectacular pieces of art including wall plates. We didn't buy any because they are quite expensive but well worth a look anyway. Highly recommended if you are looking for a place to visit in the Peak District in all weathers." | |
