"Stoneyhurst College is a magnificant old boarding school just outside Hurst Green, Lancashire. It is open to the public on days during the summer.
Apart from the buildings, grounds, and beautiful scenery, a key reason to visit is for the connections with its alumni and ex-teachers. The two most famous are Conan Doyle, who studied here and based the hall in Hound of the Baskervilles on the college, and Tolkien, who taught here and wrote of the area when he descibed the Shires. Other notable alumni include acting great Charles Laughton, Charles Wateron (who created the world's first national park), Thomas Meagher (who made the tricolour the Irish flag), Bruce Kent (CND campaigner), Chris Morris (Brass Eye etc), numerous rugby players, politicians, Saints and so on. A true hidden gem." | |
