The above is a direct quote from the website for this B&B. A self catering flat sounded exactly what we wanted when we booked from Australia for our trip in August. We were travelling for 6 weeks around the UK with our two children aged 1 and 4.

However, there was NOTHING PRIVATE OR SELF-CATERING ABOUT THIS PROPERTY.

The two guesthouses run by the operator are run from the kitchen of this so-called self-catering flat. We were not allowed to use the washing machine, or the stove and oven. There was no room in any of the cupboards for our food, as they were overflowing with food for the guesthouses. We had to clear out of the kitchen from approximately 8am until they had finished catering and clearing breakfast. Not easy with small children to structure the morning precisely so that we could be out of the way between 8am and about 11am. It also made having breakfast before the check out time of 10am difficult, as we couldn't access the kitchen to eat it.

We also couldn't leave anything on the bench or the table when they were preparing breakfast – difficult then, to know where we could store our food when the kitchen cupboards were full of guesthouse property.

The living room is the thoroughfare between the kitchen and the dining room, so not much peace to be had by retreating there either, as up to three people could be rushing in and out with breakfast. Sometimes people were in and out of the flat from 8am until 10pm at night. The front door bell was also connected to the flat and rang at all hours, including, memorably 3am.

This was the lowlight of our trip, and made our time in Oban very difficult to manage.

The flat is well appointed, but to call it self catering and private (as they do on the sign in the window) is, in our view, mis-representation at best. If you want a B&B by all means stay here, but don't come thinking you can self-cater, have any privacy, or do any washing."
