"Despite living in Durham all my life, I only recently discovered Crook Hall. It's a 13th Century, Grade 1 Listed Medieval Hall set in 4 acres of gardens which includes 2 walled gardens, a silver and white garden, an orchard, courtyard fountain, large moat pool and a maze.
The hall itself includes a Jacobean drawing room, a turret and the gallery. Recently they have acquired a wedding license and can hold marriages and civil partnerships here. They also offer a conference room. The gardens really are spectacular. Beautifully tended and the different flowers and plants look wonderful. There are seats dotted about and it's lovely to just sit down and forget your cares in the peaceful serenity. Only a few minutes walk from the City Centre it certainly doesn't feel that way once inside! The outer world seems to melt away and it feels like being in the countryside. It's also easily accessible by car with parking facilities onsite. Crook Hall has always been a family home, although not passed down and many different families have lived here sine it was built in the 13th Century. The current owners are the Bell family and they really play a large part in welcoming visitors and making it feel like a place to go back to over and over again. During the year they hold different themed events. For instance at Easter they had an Easter Egg Hunt. At Halloween there was a ghost hunt as the Hall is said to be haunted by The White Lady. At Christmas Santa Claus will be visiting! Admission is charged at £5.50 for adults, £5 for concessions and £4.50 for children. A family ticket is also available for £16. All proceed from ticket sales are used to help with the upkeep of the hall. Between May-September the Hall is open from 11am-5pm Sunday-Thursday. However they do open for special events outside this time so it's always worth checking their website to see what's on." | |
