Lovely Walks around DurhamDurham RiverbanksEnjoyable Walk in/near Durham, Durham, England North East Review added: 13/12/2009 22:12 By: durhamgirl (£67.00 earned from reviews) Earn £££'s
"Even though Durham can be a pretty busy little city there are some really nice walks alongside the riverbanks. Anybody who may have looked at an aerial photo of the city will know that Durham Cathedral is at the heart of the city and it is surrounded on three sides by a loop of the River Wear. As such it's nice to walk around the Cathedral this way. There are a lot of entrances to the walk and in most places there are 2 path, one near the river and one further up the bank. There are entrances opposite The Gates, near The Prince Bishops and near the Student Union building.
There are several things to see on the walk. One being 'The Count's House'. This is a small building right near the riverside. The story goes that the house belonged to Joseph Boruwlaski who was a polish dwarf born in 1739. During adolescence he became companion to Countess Humiecka who took him all over Europe. He later married and continued to tour Europe and showcase his music. In his later years an offer was made to him to live in Durham in the house we now know as 'The Count's House' He died in 1837 at the age of 97 and some of his clothes, shoes and violin are in display in the Town Hall alongside a life size statue of him. There are also several large statues at several places alongside the banks, including one that resembles the statues from Easter Island with large faces. Near the cricket club there is also a small bandstand and a larger than life statues of a cow known as 'The Dun Cow' Even though all of these walks are right in the middle of Durham, as soon as you step onto the footpath all the noise and bustle from the city seems to melt away." | |
