"The Angel of The North was completed in 1998 after 4 years of construction. It was designed by Anthony Gormley and cost of nearly £800,000.
She stands on top of a hill over looking the A1 and is virtually impossible to miss at 66ft tall and with a wingspan of 178ft. Built from steel, the sculpture has a acquired a weathered look, which I quite like, although due to the way it's built it means her head now looks like a Chocolate Orange! Over the last 12 years it has become an icon and instantly recognisable as being from the North East. Not bad considering the majority of local people hated it when first built. Although you can go up the the bottom of the sculpture, I wouldn't recommend it. She is best viewed from a distance and as she is so conveniently placed, she's en route to a lot of North East attractions." | |
