"I feel Kirklees light railway is a lovely place to take younger children for a trip out. Kirklees light railway can be found in the village of Clayton West. Either pop the postcode in your Sat Nav or follow the good old fashion brown tourist signs which can be found when you leave the M1 motorway at junction 38 or 39. Parking here is free which is a bonus and there is plently of parking

The lovely west yorkshire countryside makes a wonderful setting for this light railway. There are choice of two train rides you can here. Firstly there is a mini train that travels around a large duck pond this costs just 50p and runs all the time throughout the day or you can have a ride or the much larger steam train which runs once every hour. It is important to check for the train timetable as it doesn't run all year round. It railway also host special events throughout the year when the children can ride on Thomas or take a ghost train on Halloween. You can simply visit there website to keep up to date with whats on.

The prices in 2009 were £6.50 for an adult ticket childs ticket 3-15 years £4.50 under 3's free or a family ticket was £20.00 for two adults and two children. The train journey last around 50 mins and takes you down to the village of Shelley through lots of beautiful countryside. Its a great ride out and kids can spot animals in the fields. My 3 year old loved it.

Food can be bought from a cafe at the station and there is seating both inside and out, if you want to take a picnic there is lots out places to eat your own food on picnic benches. You might want to pack extra bread in your picnic as the ducks on the pond enjoy been feed too.

Next to the cafe is shop full of Thomas goodies to buy including clothing, toys and gifts. Plus there is a great train themed play area for the kids. It had a climbing frames and swings and slides and lots of woodchip on the floor for soft landings.
