"Whitby is an amazing blend of old and new. What's more, it features strongly in Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula' which means that you can actually sit where Mina Harker sat in the novel, right next to the old abbey, peering out over the very sea where the doomed ship brought Dracula to shore.
And if that's not amazing, you can marvel at the town of Whitby itself. A mass of jostling old buildings with a veritable maze of streets. The birthplace of Captain Cook and the ruined abbey on top of the hill make Whitby an amazing historical experience. Like fossils? Take a trek along Whitby's beach, close to the cliffs and prepare to be amazed. You won't have to look far before finding something. It may not be too spectacular, just a miller's thumb or an ammonite, but after a few hours you'd be surprised how many fossils you can find - the place is literally teeming with them. If that's not enough, there's fish and chips, little cafes and a horde of fantastic pubs. Whitby's great!" | |
