"I think one of the first things I did after we booked our Skye hotel was to look for beaches. There's really not many to choose from but the one that looked like paradise was Coral Beaches to the North West of the island. We hadn't actually planned on going there but after driving to Dunvegan Castle and it pouring with rain we decided just to keep going and head to the beach.

It's not too hard to find. After reaching Dunvegan Castle, just follow the road which becomes single track. A lot of the coast line is quite rocky with lots of seaweed and no sand. I didn't think many people would actually be there because of the weather but after driving about 3.5 miles from the castle (head for Claigan and turn left at the end of the road) reaching the car park there were quite a few cars.

Putting on waterproofs and walking boots is advised if the weather isn't looking too promising as there is a bit of a walk to find the white sandy beach. There is a path as you head down to the sea and I was a little disappointed because there only seemed to be a tiny patch of sand. A lot of this area was quite rocky, absolutely covered in seaweed but quite a few shells around. You have to be very careful walking as it's so easy to slip. From that area of sand you then just need to walk onto the grass and between the rocky patch and follow it up hill. From there you can see the white sandy beach and the greeny blue waters.

From the car park to the white sandy beach it's over a mile walk and it can get quite muddy if it's been raining. We did see a few kids around. They will have to be careful walking down the hill as although there are foot paths they're quite narrow and a gust of wind could easily knock you off balance. There are also a few streams to jump over. I was surprised that a lot of the grass hasn't worn away as I expect a lot of people will be walking over there. The whole walk has great views not just of the beach but to the islands nearby.

The white sandy beach isn't huge and the sand isn't particularly fine. There were still a lot of shells to be found here and of course, it gets its name from the coral. There's so much of it in tiny pieces. The water is clear and such a beautiful blue/green, it would look like paradise on a lovely warm day. Even on a very windy and wet day it looked lovely so although we were getting brain freeze and soaked it was definitely worth visiting. We walked right along the edge of the land and round the tip but the other side wasn't as spectacular with a rocky wall fenced off with barbed wire. It did offer a little shelter from the wind though before heading back.

There are no facilities at Coral Beaches. I ended up having to sit in the back seat of the car and change my jeans as they were soaked through with the rain so a change of clothes are also recommended. We'd also visited Glen Brittle Beach and although Glen Brittle was far larger, there was so much rubbish whereas Coral Beaches were so clean with no rubbish washed up or left lying around the grass."
