"The Clarence is one of the oldest gay pubs in Plymouth. Surprisingly for a city of its size Plymouth has only two gay pubs.
It is located just of the main nightclub drag (Union St).
The pub itself had a reputation of being an old mans bar, but the landlord has gone to great pains recently to change this image. Recently redecorated the pub is now a brighter and more welcoming venue.
Locals bdescribe the bar as "gay friendly" but there is a great number of customers from all walks of life and sexual orientation that frequent the place because of its friendly atmosphere.
From Friday to Sunday there is always something happening in the Clarence that makes it a good place to start the evening before heading into the city for the nightclubs.
Fridays there is a quiz, alternating on saturdays there is either a disco or karaoke, and on sndays there is bingo and a raffle in the evening, as well as a free buffet from 2pm.
I have been drinking at the Clarence for many years and have watched it grow and flourish into a place where anyone can go and not feel alian, a bonus for any visitor to a strange town."
