"I've heard (although I don't know how much truth there is in it) that Essential is the loudest nightclub in Europe. It's easy to believe. Essential is Manchester's number 1 gay venue, but it's a good idea to know exactly what you're getting yourself into...
The queue is normally huge from 10.30pm onwards, so you might be stood there for a good 40 minutes. The bouncers at the door are ok as bouncers go, but if they don't know your face be prepared to be turned away.
Inside, it's set over three floors. The top floor, or 'pop lounge', as it's name suggests plays pop and R & B music. Some locally famous DJs play there, such as Nicksy from Galaxy 102.
The bottom two floors are for dance music. Usually funky house, turning into hard and bouncy house towards the end of the night. There are some excellent DJs playing here, such as Little Miss Natalie and Mad Miss Hell.
There is a little shop by the cloakroom where you can get chewing gum, sweets, snacks and what's known as a 'pass-out'. Pass-outs are available after midnight and cost a pound, and basically it's a wrist band that means you can leave and re-enter the club at your leisure, without having to pay each time you come back in.
The people in Essential are usually very friendly, and the crowd is mostly gay but a little mixed. It does get very busy and very hot in there though so be sure to keep hydrated!
It's not unknown to leave with a few party invites from strangers who are holding gatherings at their houses after the club shuts.
Essential is open from 10.00 Friday - Sunday, and closes anywhere between 4am and 8am. Costs between £7 and £12 to get in, depending on what time you turn up."
