What to do in Leicester...Leicester, Leicestershire, England East MidlandsRecommendation added: 04/03/2006 18:21 By: scdaniels (YSUK rating +24) scdaniels has been thanked 2 times for this contribution
"I moved to Leicester about 3 years ago to come to university. I only lived in Derby so I assumed it wouldn't be too different. How wrong I was! Leicester seems to have something new happening every week, from moving from a town in which the main yearly event was the beer festival, this came as a big surprise to me. There is a small fair on in the centre of town frequently (not just once a year, more like once a month), which has toy grabbers, rides, and stalls. There is Englands largest covered market, which specializes in fruit and veg, but sells most things that you would expect to find on a market.
There are two shopping centres, The Shires and The Haymarket (which also contains a theatre). There are all the shops you would find in Town centres, Burtons, DP, Topshop, USC, Laura Ashley , House of frasier, Debenhams, etc etc. There are Mcdonalds and Gregs. When it comes to eating out here, the choice is huge! You can get the traditional pub lunch at Weatherspoons, (or if you want a huge dinner, and are willing to travel a little out of town there is the hungry horse pub, the oadby owl on the A6 just past Oadby), an all you can eat chinese at Flame on Granby street which in the day is very cheap, fom just £5, and exeptionally good (you can even get them to cook food for you on the grill while you watch), I like duck pancakes and these are on the all you can eat which alone costs more than £5 usually!, There are a lot of Indian restaraunts on London Road, Including, Shimla pinks, the tiffin, Nila palace, The curry House to name a few. The prices rance between these, and it is just £8 for 3 courses at Nila palace, up to the more expensive (and more posh) Shimla pinks. There is Burger king, McDonalds, Gregs, Pizza hut, Subway, etc for those of you who just want a quick bite, there is a tapas bar in town but I didn't rate it too highly, if you want real good Tapas, go to Barcalonetta on Queens road, it is superb! It is home to the Leicester Tigers (I'm afraid I don't know much about sport so...) which has a pub opposite called The victory which claims to be Leicesters best sporting pub, for a pint after the match. There is an odeon cinema at Freemans Park just on the outskirts of town (next to Mecca bingo), and next to that there is The Local hero pub which does 2 meals for £10 that includes steaks, and Sunday dinners... and Nando's. There is also a Warner Bro's cinema further out of town on the way to Fosse Park, which is a large out of town shopping centre, just off the motorway. We even have a Racecourse! I must admit I'm loving Leicester, especially the nightlife (Which will need a whole new review!). And I hope I don't sound like a pig with my raving about the food places, just once I got going....." Was this recommendation useful?
