"I have walked this ridge many times and I never get bored of it; the scenery is beautiful, and, on a clear day, you can see for ten or more miles across the Peak District. There are five points in this ridge altogether; I cannot remember the exact order in which they go, but they are: Mam Tor, Hollins Cross, Win Hill, Lose Hill and Back Tor ('Tor' is an Old English World for hill). I can recall that Mam Tor is the first one you climb (providing you start at that end); there is a car park at the base of it where you can buy snacks and ice-creams during the summer months only.
If you enjoy simple walks (except for Back Tor, all ascents and descents are easy in this ridge) and some of the best scenery in the Peak District as a reward for your efforts, then Mam Tor ridge is definitely a walk for you. It is relatively short walk (about eight miles), but there are exit points off the ridge between and at any of the main points, so this can be shortened to suit your abilities or needs. The ridge itself is situated about equidistance from Sheffield and Manchester; from one side of the ridge there is the village of Edale; from the other there are the villages of Castleton and Hope. All three of these villages are picturesque and offer many traditional pubs from where you can start or end the walk of Mam Tor ridge if you so choose. This walk is easily accessible from either side of the Pennines; it presents some brilliant scenery and is a good form of exercise for all the family."
