"The 'Buffet Bar', Stalybridge, is actually a pub and not, as its name suggests, a buffet bar. It is called this as it's situated in a Victorian Buffet bar on platform 1 of Stalybridge Train Station. This has to be the sweetest, quaintest pub i've ever come across. There is old railway memorabilia all around the walls but this isn't just for train geeks - it is a real ale buffs paradise. Unless you live in Stalybridge or read the Good Pub Guide you probably wouldn't even know this place is here, which is probably why it's very much a 'local's pub'.
The Buffet Bar serves food, but not like what we've come to expect from pub food. It only serves things like potato hash (just like your mum used to make!) and black peas in vinegar - all traditional, basic food but delicious and really cheap too! There is also a selection of sweets, crisps, chocolate, drinks and fruit to keep the kids happy! Every week the Buffet Bar has new guest ales, and all the kind of thing you've never heard of before and things like limited edition ales from known breweries. It's these weekly guest ales that keep this pub a firm favourite in the Good Pub Guide. There's also a very good selection of lagers, and they have all the usual spirits and wines too. The friendly staff and mix of locals(many of them quite eccentric and full of funny and interesting stories!) make everyone feel welcome. It's not unusual to hear people saying 'damn, there goes my train, i'll get the next one' as they simply don't want to leave this warm friendly haven. Highly recommended" | |
