"Mellington Hall Hotel and Holiday Park, Mellington Hall Hotel is set in 290 acres of beautiful countryside, within the grounds they cater for static caravans, touring caravans, motor homes and tents.
The Hotel
Mellington Hall Hotel was formally a Victorian Mansion, with this comes the grandeur of a Victoria Home with high ceilings and splendid décor, with period features. We have not stayed in the hotel so can only go from the brochure for the description of the bedrooms - The bedrooms look modern, beautifully decorated each room being individually designed. The hotel has named each of the bedrooms after local areas; all the rooms have ensuite facilities, remote control TV, direct dial telephones, hairdryers and the usual freebies.

There is a bar which has a lovely atmosphere is reasonably priced and there are bar meals available. From the bar snack menu I would recommend the Toasted BLT at £4.50 it was absolutely delicious and served with side salad and crisps. The evening Bar Menu has a selection of Starters, Main Course, Side Orders and Desserts.

Starters range from £3.00 - £4.75, on our visit you have a choice of
Soup of the day,
Prawn Cocktail with brown bread & butter,
Battered crispy mushrooms with garlic mayonnaise dip.
Garlic Bread served with a salad garnish or
Chicken Liver Parfait served with chutney & garlic Bread.

Main Course ranging from £6.95 - £12.95 with a choice of
Battered Fresh Fillet of Cod, coated in home-made Beer Batter, served with Chips & peas.
Grilled Gammon & egg, served with chips & peas
Mellington's Mixed Grill, chicken, gammon, sirloin steak, pork & Shropshire sausage, garnished with grilled tomatoes, mushrooms & egg, served with chips & peas.
12oz Sirloin Steak, garnished with tomatoes & mushrooms, served with chips & peas.

Home made Curry of the day served with rice
Home made Lasagne served with chips & salad
Cajun Chicken Breast, spicy breast of chicken coated in Cajun spice served with Chips & Salad.

Chefs Prime Beef Burger topped with Mozzarella served in a Bap accompanied with salad & potato wedges.
Chefs Veggie Burger served in a Bap accompanied with salad & potato wedges.

Side orders - choices of chips, potato wedges, new potatoes, fresh vegetable selection, side salad, Brandy & peppered sauce.

Desserts prices are all £3.75

Chocolate Fudge Cake served with fresh cream
Home made Bread & Butter Pudding served with custard
Profiteroles swerved with dark chocolate sauce & cream
Hot Apple Pie served with custard
And a selection of Ice creams.

I cannot say if this is a regular menu for the bar, but this is what was on offer during our stay there.

During our visit we had an evening meal with we ate outside in the hotel grounds enjoying the views - I must say the four of us that dined all really enjoyed the food, it was all cooked to our individual specifications, there was no problems at all when my friend picked something of the menu and changed the contents to suit her needs and the staff were exceedingly friendly and helpful.

There is an al-a-carte restaurant available at a higher cost. We did take a quick peep at the menu for the weekend we were there it was fully booked, so we did not get to sample it. I will say that we have dined in many al-a-carte restaurants over the years and from what I can remember of the menu - the listing followed the style you would expect.

The Hotel also plays hosts to Weddings, Private functions and Conferences.

Prices to stay at the hotel are £80.00 for standard double room and £90.00 for a superior room (which I am reliably informed by the receptionist is a much larger and superior room for your money). This price per night also includes your full English breakfast. All rooms apart from the Bar are non smoking.

The Static Caravans

Now unfortunately I can only tell you a little about this - they are sold starting from £16,000 by Mellington Hall Holiday Home Park - they offer ranges like The Winchester, The Lyndhurst and The Vogue, The Roxburgh and The Belvedere. There is a stipulation that all static's have to been green due to a planning restriction. The static's are all privately owned and not rented out. Sorry don't know how much the ground rent would be. I can say even though I do prefer them in white or white and cream, they do look nice and blend in all being green. For those of you that do not know the green in caravans is what I would call a sage green.

Touring Caravan Site

Now this is a bit further down in the grounds just past the Static site, you reverse your caravan or Mobile home onto a hard-standing plot, you have to be precise as there is a hard-standing covered in stones (like shale) for your awning. So you don't need your ground sheet. You have a TV point here and the site will lend you a lead giving you a great TV reception. You also have you electric hook up close by, Water points were on every hook ups, so very close to your spot, the Waste Disposal was within 20m from where you are set up (this is for all caravans as it was in the centre). The disabled toilet and wash room was also in the centre of the Site. The Touring Caravan Site is set is a square with the disposal point and disabled toilet in the centre. There is no play area next to the caravan so no noise around the plots, other than chatting and TV's etc.

This site is right in the middle of beautiful woodland - at the rear of our site we had a little bank that went down to a path at the side of the lake, which had a little weir leading under a bridge and onto a small lake which is used for fishing.

The views from here are astounding with views of the Welsh mountains and countryside.

Now Toilet and Washing facilities - to get to these you have as short walk through very picturesque scenery over a little bridge and through a chipped bark path and trees, there are little features dropped casually yet decoratively around the walk. This may sound a long way but it is only a 2 min walk from your plot. The building is a modern structure with an appearance of a small bungalow - These are immaculately clean actually I would have to say that they are the cleanest toilets and showers blocks that I have been in (and I assure you with our caravan holidays we have seen a few).

Costs here are £15.00 per night - they will also store your caravan for £7.00 a week if you want to leave it there for the season. (But, we only asked about this for one week - so unsure what long term storage would cost).

Tents

The plot for camping with your tent is just a little down from the Touring Caravan Site and shares the same facilities:

What is on the site for everyone to use.

The Hotel itself is open for all to enjoy the bar and the restaurants; they also have a beer garden. Just opposite the beer garden is a children's play area with chipped bark for their safety, wooden logged climbing frames, swings etc. You can have a drink and watch your children play safely.

Pets are allowed, but dogs should be kept on a lead and obviously you must clean up after them. I did not come across any nasty discoveries on our walks around the site.
There is a dog exercising area.

As stated previously there is fishing available which has a small charge starting from £10.00 Fri/sat/sun - season ticket is £30.00 and you must have a fishing license.

There is a nice picnic area which is facing the pool - so the family can watch you fishing.

Public telephone and Laundry facilities are available on site.

Washing up facilities are located in the Toilet\shower block area.

The whole site is disabled friendly with tarmac roads all round the site and disabled access to the hotel.

Location -

A map and good directions can be obtained from their website - www.mellingtonhallcaravanpark.co.uk , it is situated between Church Stoke and Montgomery, Powys, Wales. (I put Wales in because my geography is terrible), just off the A489.

Out and About

Church Stoke - this is only a couple of minutes down the road, where you will find a couple of local public houses that have beer gardens and serve food, there is a large local supermarket, garden centre, café, petrol station, lottery point, post office and cash machines all in the same spot. On Sundays they hold a large Car Boot Sale\Market.

You are not far from Church Stretton which offers lovely walks over the Long Mynd and is a wonderful small village with local pubs, shops, café's and a large variety of Antique shops.

Shrewsbury with its wonderful old buildings, bridges, museums and large town for shopping is only approx 20min drive away.

Historical Ironbridge can be reached within 30mins; this is a small village along the River Severn with six museums including the Blists Hill (which is a Victorian village, set in beautiful countryside). Lovely walks along the river - a small town which hosts The Merrythoughts Teddy Bear Factory, small craft shops, antique shops, small cafes and loads of pubs along the riverside. Not to forget the famous Iron Bridge.

Ludlow Castle and town is approx 35mins away.

Other Castles not too far away are Stokesay and Powys.

Also not too far away you have Welshpool, Montgomery, Bishops Castle and Clun.

There are hiking maps available free of charge from reception.

All in all you have a vast choice of going out into the countryside and just enjoying the peace and the views. Travel a bit and satisfy your lust for shopping in different towns, enjoying the history of the local heritage or finally just chill out and enjoy the peace of the beautiful surroundings you are staying in.

Conclusion:

If you want a wonderful place to escape to what ever your budget then here is wonderful, it is relaxing, peaceful and outstandingly beautiful - well worth the trip. Please pop in and take a look at their website, where they have a virtual tour that will show you some of the grounds. It is a beautiful place to just get away from the stresses of life - we really enjoyed our weekend away here. We have visited many sites and this has got to be the best we have visited so far."
