"The English Lounge on High Street in Manchester is an all round great place. It used to be a HogsHead, which was rather grotty, but since it was taken over and refurbished it's just lovely. As soon as you walk in you notice the decor. Wood certainly seems to be the theme here, and although wooden floors, walls and ceilings can often seem a little too much this place looks really warm and welcoming, and the dim lighting just makes it appear cosier.
Food is served downstairs in the main bar area at lunchtime and sells bar snacks. Upstairs, 'The Lounge' is the proper restaurant with an extensive menu. The food is delicious, whether it's a sandwich at lunchtime (served on 'doorstop' bread) or a meal in the evening. There are often special offers on food too, for example the Valentines Day special was £21 per head and included 3 courses and champagne and strawberries
There is always a good range of 'real ales' here, including some guest ales. They also sell fruit wines that i've never seen anywhere else before. The staff are incredibly friendly, which isn't unusual for Manchester, but you still notice it. The staff will stand and chat to you while serving your food and this friendliness is one of the things that keeps people coming back.
The only problem with The English Lounge is that it can get really busy at night. It's always an idea to book if you want to eat here in the evening and customers will often be turned away after about 10pm at weekends because they're full
