"Diverse landscape, beautiful scenery, British yet strangly French at the same time - Welcome to Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. In my opinion, Guernsey is one of the most magical and mystical places you could ever visit. It has a certain energy about it you can't get anywhere else. The moment you set foot upon its land, you feel calm and relaxed. Its kind of like when your abroad, and you know your away from home. All the worries drain away. History says that Guernsey was battled out in 1204 between France and England. It sided with Engand when King John lost Normandy to Phillippe Augustus of France. Guernsey villagers then built a castle, to avoid a French invasion. The place is full of history, everywhere you look, there is something facinating to see. Allow me to tell you more about Guernsey, in some detail.

Location:

Guernsey is classed as a channel island, and is offshore from the UK. Although it is part of the UK, it is very close to France indeed. There are other channel islands surrounding Guernsey, including Jersey, a short boat ride away. Guernsey has wonderful beaches, with golden white sand, and unspoilt waters. You can walk for miles and never get bored.

What To Do:

Although Guernsey is a small island, there is plenty to do! From arts and crafts to museums, there truly is something for everyone. Some of the highlights of guernsey, which I have previously visited are below:

Victor Hugo's House (famous french poet)

In this house, Famous french writer spent 14 years in exile decorating it and writing his masterpieces. It is preserved to its original standard, and well worth a look.

Beau Sejour Leisure Centre

Want a relaxing swim, fancy a dip in the Jaquzzi? Want to sweat the stresses away in the Sauna? Then I reccommend you visit the islands leisure centre. Very modern in design, it has the latest stuff, and is very reasonable in cost!

These are just a handful of the things to do in Guernsey, it is well worth checking out the tourist board website, which has loads more information about the attractions of Guernsey! http://www.visitguernsey.com

Shopping:

Guernsey has a whole host of different shops, including British favourites like Woolworths right down to local bakers. It is well worth checking out the back streets, as hidden suprises are everywhere. Make sure you stock up on your allowance of cigarettes and alcohol. Yes, thats right! You can take small quantities of tobacco and alcohol back home with you, and prices are amazing! Starting at £2.50 for 20 cigarettes. Also, if you felt seasick from the journey in, go to the local pharmacy, close to the port, and ask for their special seasick tablets. THEY ACTUALLY WORK!

Where To Stay:

Guernsey has a whole host of guest houses, B+B's etc. the best place to look for places to stay is on the tourist board website. http://www.visitguernsey.com/accommodationdeals/
There is loads of different offers, and some hotels offer things like free car hire when you book with them. If your looking at camping, to cut down on costs, try La Bailloterie Camping in Vale, a few miles from St Peters Port tel 01481 243636.

The Kids:

There is plenty to offer for the children, especially during the summer months, where various events take place. They will love the islands swimming complex, the beautiful sandy beaches and the various war musuems the island has to offer.

Getting There:

The most important thing of course! There are two main options: Plane or Boat. The boat sets sail from Weymouth, UK and takes around 2 hours or so. Costs vary depending on the season, but expect to pay as little as £20 return for a day trip. Flights leave from several airports accross the UK, and start at £69 return. Again, the best thing to do is check out the tourist board website.

To Finish:

Guernsey is reccommended for that relaxing break you have always dreamed about. You will feel right at home as soon as you arrive, and will leave feeling refreshed and ready to get back to normal life!"
