"Sheringham - The pride of North Norfolk. Wonderful shops, beautiful scenery, friendly people and inviting restaurants, plus a whole lot more. Sheringham is not your typical British seaside resort. Sherringham is tranquil and peaceful and my idea of heaven. Let me tell you what makes Sheringham so wonderful, in my full town review
LOCATION Sheringham is located in North Norfolk. It is around 20 miles away from the delicious seaside town of wells-next-the-sea. From London, expect journey times by car of about 4 hours. For a full route plan, visit www.theaa.com or use any other leading route plan software. WHAT TO DO There is plenty to offer in Sheringham, and something for the whole family. Me and my wife visit here quite often, and we are never short of activities. Here are just some: SHERRINGHAM MUSEUM Sheringham Museum is located in converted fishermen's cottages and washhouses. The entrance is next to Harvey's, Station Street. This museum offers a fascinating insight in to Sherringham, and how it went from being a quiet seaside fishing town to the Jewel of Norfolk. Photographic and ephemeral displays trace this development taking you back to the days of bathing machines, long crinolines and the bustle of a rapidly expanding town. PRIORY AND MAZE Set over a huge 10 acres of land, this attraction has two mazes, and loads of beautiful gardens. An Adventure for children and adults alike, and makes a perfect day out. go on the great pine walk, and experience peace and beautiful surroundings. Also, be sure to check out the main maze, named the Priory Maze. It is based on the ruins of the adjacent Beeston Priory. Great for exploration, adventure and enjoyment! There is also Flower Meadows, streams and water, lots of wildlife and hours of fun to be found! STEAM RAILWAY The North Norfolk Railway offers a 10 mile round trip by steam train through a delightful area of North Norfolk. Sometimes, A diesel train is used instead! Ideal for train enthusiasts and everyone else alike! SPLASH LEISURE CENTRE A wonderful swimming complex, suitable for all the family. There is so much to explore in Sheringham. Why not call into the visitors information office: Station Approach, Sheringham (01263) 824329 WHERE TO STAY I have personally never stayed in Sheringham itself, I usually stay in neighbouring Wells-next-the-sea (see my separate review for accommodation) but I can recommend some places to try, that my family have stayed in before (they visit more than me!) Budget: Oak Lodge Guest House, Morris Street. Call 01263 823158 Also try Sheringham Youth Hostel - see www.yha.org Mid Range: Beaumaris Hotel, 15 South Street. Call 01263 822370 Top Class: The Links Country Park Hotel & Golf Club, Sandy Lane, West Runton NR Sheringham. Tel: 01263 838383 (nb nobody I know has stayed here, but it is renowned as the best in the area) There are also a number of campsites in Sheringham, and its surrounding areas. Please call tourist information for more details (01263) 824329 WHERE TO EAT By far, my favourite eating establishment in Sheringham is the Jolly Tar restaurant, on Station Road. Offering a full menu of home cooked foods, including local seafood, the quality of meal and friendliness of staff is 5 star. If you are looking for fish and chips, the best one, in my experience, is Dave's, on co-operative street. It has been a traditional chip shop for many years, and the food is always to a very high standard. Failing that, explore the many pubs the town has to offer. Most have a menu of traditional pub favourites. WHERE TO DRINK There are many pubs in Sheringham, which are full of character. It would be impossible to single out one or two pubs as 'the best' they really are all equal in their own right, and I visit them all. But one that is extra special is Sherry N Ham on Sunway Park. With Jazz nights, friendly staff, a huge selection of drinks and a buzzing atmosphere, it is really good. Sheringham truly is a fantastic place, whether its just for the day or for a whole week, there is enough here to keep everyone occupied.
