Helford:Creekside BeautyBodmin, Cornwall, England South WestRecommendation added: 23/03/2006 21:13 By: jsimons128 (YSUK rating +93) jsimons128 has been thanked 1 times for this contribution
"Thought by many to be britians loveliest creekside villiage, Helford lies on the southern bank of the river that bears its name. At one time an important port, even with its own Custom house, it is now merely a peaceful villiage that straggles along both sides of a wooded creek with narrow winding streets that discourage motorists from taking their vehicles past the car park at the top of the hill that leads down to the ford across the inlet.
Colour washed thatched cottages and a strech of river active with river craft make this a favourite village for yachtsmen and others. One of the thatched cottages is the shipwrights arms built in the 17th century and its present name recalling a one time owner, master shipwright Deane, whose boatyard was alongside. Now part of the costal footpath, the foot ferry to Helford passage has ben taking travellers across this section of the river for well over 400 years. There is no church in the villiage but a mission chapel whose bell was salvaged from the bay of Panama, a square-rigger lost a few miles away in the great blizzard on 1891. Helford is situated on the north east coast of the Lizard peninsula. It has a well stocked post office and gift shop, a chandlery, a pub, an award winning restraunt, boat hire, a sailing school, accomidation, toilets and parking." Was this recommendation useful?
