"Situated on the other side of the Penryn River from Falmouth, Flushing gets its name from the Dutch engineers who built the quays and sea walls here in the 17th century.
It is said to be the warmest place in England and certainly one waterfront faces the south and the other the west, while the whole village is well sheltered from the prevailing winds. No wonder so many Falmouth Packet commanders chose to build their elegant homes here. And Admiral Nelson to spend his holidays here. You can still see a shipyard here where some of the Falmouth Packet boats, and even warships, were once launched. Also here is Trevissome House, a country mansion that was once the home of captain WH Dowman, who saved the sailing ship, The Cutty Sark(now in a permanent berth at Greenwich), from the breakers. At the far end of the village in Kiln Quay, one of the most unusual homes in Cornwall. A beautiful Tudor black and white house built in surrey, it was carefully dismantled and re-erected here on three acres of land at the waters edge by an American lady who wanted to live in Cornwall but couldn't bear to give up her half timbered home. Within sight of her house is Trefusus Point, scene of the worst sea disaster ever in Britain it was involved in a transport ship, the queen which was driving on rocks here with the loss of 195 lives. Flushing has the facilities you would expect in a holiday village-shops, pubs, a restaurant and a cafe, accommodation, toilets and parking. And facilities for fuelling, repairing and storing boats." | |
