"Begun by William the conqueror in the 11th century in the south east-east angle of the wall of roman Londinium, this is one of the world's most famous fortresses. It soon becomes the symbol of ultimate power, the place where even the highest and mightiest in the land could be cast down. According to tradition, 1078 marks the start of the original tower (now known as the white tower). The stronghold was enlarged in later years. Other places of particular interest are the Bloody tower(15th century), in which the little princess are said to have been smothered in 1483;St Peters Vinculas Chapel Royal in which Anne Boleyn, lady Jane Grey and the duke of Monmouth are buried; the Norman St. johns chapel, the oldest in London, and Traitors Gate, the old water gate. Adjoining the Beauchamp tower, which was the site of the scaffold, is the Yeoman Gaolers house in which lady Jane Grey and latterly Rudolf Hess were imprisoned. The white tower now contains the royal armories. These consist of the national collection of arms and amour based on the great arsenal of Henry VIII. Four of Henry the eights personal amours may be seen. There are also tournament and sporting arms, arms and armor from the middle ages to the 17th century and oriental armor. Te crown jewels are displayed in the jewel tower, and also to be seen is the royal fusiliers museum, containing uniforms, including those worn by George the fifths as colonel in chief, regimented silver and china, four dioramas of famous battles, and campaign medals, among them 10 Victoria crosses, including the prototype approved by queen Victoria herself."
