"Newport Pagnell: Buckinghamshire. A small town that is full of history and ideal location for a relaxing weekend break away. Newport Pagnell is situated a few minutes from Milton Keynes. The residents of Milton Keynes class Newport Pagnell as their own, but should you ask a Newport Pagnell resident if their town is in Milton Keynes, get ready for a fight. That's because it's not! I'm sure most people only associate Newport Pagnell with the famous car manufacturer, Aston Martin Lagonda, but there is much more to this beautiful town than that, and I am to tell you in this guide. From a lovely pub to an tranquil walk, read about it here:

NEWPORT PAGNELL LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS
Newport Pagnell is located in the county of Buckingham. It is a couple of miles away from the town come new city of Milton Keynes. This wonderful part of the UK is only 60 miles from London, 60 miles from Birmingham and 15 miles from Northampton. Is is easily accessed from the M1, by coming off at Junction 14. When you come off the slip road, you will be greeted by a road sign, pointing you the rest of the way.

HISTORY OF THE TOWN
I have been interested in the history of Newport Pagnell for quite a few years. Its name came from William The Conqueror, and his family were closely associated with the town for many years. The history records of Newport Pagnell's history goes back well over a thousand years, and can be explored further when you visit. There really is a lot to learn about this town, and information can be found in the local library, and dotted around on information plaques. I won't spoilt it anymore, as I am sure you will want to discover the history for yourself.

WHAT TO DO
This guide aims to tell you about the things to do in Newport Pagnell, therefore I will not focus on Milton Keynes. BUT there is plenty more to do and see in MK, so if you are with children, I recommend you see the various guides on youstayuk, which will offer an insight into the activities available. The things to do in Newport Pagnell, are mainly focused at the young adult and over generation (18+) but that is not to say the younger ones won't enjoy everything. Here is a guide to what's hot:

THE ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA FACTORY
Famous for its beautiful British made cars, like the DB7 and the Vanquish, the Aston Martin factory is located just outside the town centre on Tickford Street. The factory has buildings on each side of the road. If your very lucky, you might catch an Aston Martin open day, where you get the chance to tour the building, see the cars being made and of course, view the finished product. Its a bit like Willy Wonkas chocolate factory, they only open the doors on rare occasions. If you can't get inside, there is plenty to see on the outside. They usually have many cars on show, so you don't have to even go inside to experience the Aston Martin pleasure. Also, look through the windows as you walk past. Although they are covered up, there are small holes you can peer through (I'm sure they done this on purpose) and see the team in action, making parts. By arrangement, they may let you look around inside, just telephone or write first. Call 01908 610620. Price=Free

TICKFORD BRIDGE
Tickford Bridge is a beautiful Iron structure, built in 1810. This is one of my favourite things in Newport Pagnell. It is the only Iron bridge in the country, that still takes road traffic. Underneath runs the River Lovat. It is an amazing experience just to stand on the footpath, and take in the view of this famous bridge. Find the bridge on the edge of the town centre, just down from the golden fry chip shop, between Silver Street and Tickford Street Price= FREE!

MIDDLETON SWIMMING POOL
In my opinion, one of the best pools in the country. No water slides, no music playing, no wave machines and no huge crowds. Just a relaxing, tranquil swimming experience. Located at the Bottom of Tickford Street, the swimming pool was once open air, until a building was constructed over it in the 90's. It is the only pool I know of, where the water is shallow at the front, deep in the middle, then shallow at the end. Heated to a wonderful temperature, it really is a treat to swim in it. It is a family pool, but you will usually find just adults swimming there. Throughout the year, inflatable sessions are held, with the children in mind!

THE FAMOUS HERITAGE TRAIL
I previously told you about the history Newport Pagnell has to explore. Well, why not check out the heritage trail. I am not one for copying other peoples work, but the full trail plan can be found on http://newport-pagnell.org.uk/Category.asp?cat=833
It takes you around the most famous parts of Newport Pagnell, and is truly fantastic. From the wonderful 13th century church, to the traditional pubs, everything is covered.

PUB'S AND NIGHTLIFE
**Drink Responsibly** Newport Pagnell has a fantastic collection of public houses, all ready to welcome you with a refreshing beverage. In my opinion, the best pub is The Bull, on Tickford Street. They always have a huge selection of real ales, as well as lagers and spirits. The staff are friendly, and there is a real community spirit. Other than that, check out the pubs on the heritage trail, detailed above. The building have character to match the atmosphere.

WHERE TO STAY
Newport Pagnell only has a small range of accommodation, and it is best to look in Milton Keynes, where you will find a lot more. As I live in Milton Keynes, I have not really stayed in Newport Pagnell BUT I have spent a couple of nights at the Bull Inn, as I was running the bar there during late lock in hours. They offer basic, but good value accommodation. The rooms are not en-suite, but there is a bathroom in the sleeping area. Rooms come complete with Television and tea and coffee facilities. For bookings, call Terry (The Landlord) on 01908 610325. Rooms start at £25 per person per night (no single supplement too!)

WHERE TO EAT
There is a fantastic range of places to eat in Newport Pagnell, to suit all tastes and pockets. The wife and I always choose to eat in Newport, rather than MK. Here is my personal favourite, which I would highly recommend:

Odells Restaurant and Wine Bar
Apparently haunted by a friendly ghost, Odells is a restaurant of the finest quality. The menu is stacked with high quality dishes, like panned duck and lamb shank. Dress Code= Smart. Allow £20-£30 per person plus drinks. For reservations, and further information please contact 01908 217716 or visit www.odells.co.uk

Other than that you will find a good selection of Indian, Chinese and pub cuisine. The Indian restaurant I would recommend the most is the Mysore, located in the town centre. It has many awards of excellence, and has represented Buckinghamshire in UK championships. An amazing experience.

Overall, I would highly recommend Newport Pagnell as a great weekend break. I love visiting this town whenever I can. Although located close to Milton Keynes, it is a million miles away in reality. An absolute must of a destination. 5/5
