"Although, primarily an industrial town, Camborne can make a useful holiday centre, it has easy access to both the north and the south coasts of the country, including such popular resorts as St. Ives and Penzance. A statue in front of the Camborne public library is of Richard Trevithick who built the worlds first locomotive, surprisingly, he was actually 12 years ahead of the more renowned Stephenson, and he demonstrated it here on Christmas eve by carrying ten people up Beacon Hill, Camborne, at a faster than walking pace . the thatched cottage he was born in is near the south Crofty tin mine between Camborne and Redruth, but no longer exists but the house he spent five years is now being preserved by the national trust. Camborne is one of the largest towns in Cornwall with a wide range of shops, hotels, pubs, cafes and restaurants, parking and toilets. The Trevithick cottage at Penponds is around half a mile south-west of Camborne and it is open to serious visitors on request to the tenant."
