"Lincoln cathedral dominates Lincoln high up on a hill even at night it is flooded by lights and can be seen for 25 miles in all directions. It was built in 1092 and was destroyed later by fire in 1141 and an earthquake in 1185 Saint Hugh rebuilt it in 1192 to its current gothic style.
Lincoln cathedral owns one of the 4 magna cartas and it is on display in Lincoln castle which is opposite the cathedral
The Cathedral is 482 ft long and the crossing tower is 271 ft high, the chancel vault is 74 ft high and the nave 82 ft. The majority of stone used in the construction is local Oolitic limestone so as you can imagine being inside is quite breathe taking.
Guided tours take place daily, with specialist tours being available. Specialist tours include a guided tour of the roof and upper structures; pilgrimage tours look at religious significance and technical tours look at various workshops connected with the constant restoration projects.
The facilities include;
The Refectory, where you can buy hot meals and snacks and a shop in which you can buy a memento of your visit, toilets are also available.
There are ramps to enable disabled people to gain access to all parts of the building, and wheelchair for those needing one
An information desk is located inside which aims to answer each and every question put by visitors
Lincoln Cathedral is open during the following times:
Summer Weekdays 7.15 am - 8.00 pm (Saturdays and Sundays 7.15 am - 6.00 pm)
Winter Weekdays and Saturdays 7.15 am - 6.00 pm (Sundays 7.15 am - 5.00 pm)
Admission prices are as follows
Adults £4.00
Concessions £3.00
Children 5 -16 £1.00
Children under 5 Free
Parking is generally difficult around the cathedral so parking in the town centre car parks is advised and then walking up the historic steep hill it is hard work getting to the top but well worth it."
