"The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival is an annual festival celebrating 'the water of life', Scotland's favourite drink and one of her biggest exports and tourist attractions. Although there are distilleries all over Scotland, and I wouldn't like to say that any one is the best, Speyside is unique in that it has the highest concentration of distilleries anywhere in the world and Moray has the only 'Malt Whisky Trail'. Even if you don't like whisky, the smell of the malted barley, the mash tuns, the old copper stills: all are evocative of times gone by and an important part of the Scottish heritage.
The great thing about the whisky festival itself is the concentration of experts on hand to tell you all aspects of this wonderfull drink. You have the opportunity to mix with the master blenders, the distiller, the whisky writer, other connoisseurs, or even novices! Whether you want an in-depth tasting and nosing masterclass, a walk along the old smugglers' trails on the northern edges of the Cairngorms National Park, a demonstration of how to use whisky to the best effect in your cooking or a formal dinner marrying the best of local produce with a different whisky with each course, there is something for everyone! And there are also activites to keep the kids entertained. The organisers have also introduced a bus service to help you get around this relatively large rural area easily.
Anyway, it is one event that I won't be missing each year! It takes place over the first Spring Bank holiday weekend for 4 days, finishing on the first Monday in May. That's 27th April to 1st May 2006 or 3rd - 7th May 2007 (which is also the Highland Year of Culture)
Hope to see you there!"
