"This was a pleasant surprise! When visiting London, Forest Hill is not on the beaten track but once you talk to the locals about what they recommend you can get some interesting information!
Forest Hill is in South London on the South Circular road and is easily accesable by train or bus from anywhere in the city. In fact it's only about 10 minutes from London Bridge by train! If you have invested in a travel card for the day then take yourself out a bit further than usual, at no extra cost!
The Horniman Museum and gardens have free admission, which was surprising considering how much they had packed in! The gardens include a few animal enclsures near the picnic area so taking your own lunch, as we did, is a great idea, especially with small kids. There is a cafe/resturant within the museum with a patio area for alfresco dining but we liked to go prepared.
Inside the museum they have packed in an aquarium, world cultures room, music room, library and natural history area. The kids loved it, especially the natural history with the overstuffed walrus! There were loads of stuffed animals and fish which the children couldn't get enough of and in the world cultures my husband and I learned all about voodoo (although don't practise...yet!) This place is so educational it is hard to believe it is free. It's also very child friendly with great ideas like lockers and buggy park where you can lock up your buggy so that your child is not restrained! It's all very hands on and my two made sure they had hands on everything!
I cannot stress enough how good this museum is. A perfect day out for all the family.
Museum open daily 10:30am - 5:30pm but gardens are open 7:15 - dusk."

This sounds fantastic. When my two daughters were in buggies I remember thinking how child UNfriendly most places are - to actually find an attraction which encourages young children to explore is brilliant!
