"The Plough and Harrow hotel - in the middle of Birminghams 'hotel mile' is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise commercial area. Still utilising its original 300 year old building it has been a lodging house of some kind since the 1700's.
At the back of the building there are two towers - which are widely belived to be the inspiration for the 'Two Towers' in JRR Tolkien's 'Lord Of The Rings'. A blue plaque at the entrance to the hotel confirms that the authour did stay at the hotel during the time he was writing his most famous books.
The accommodation available is of a standard level - but its the delight of wandering down winding corridoors and up wooden staircases to reach your room that is the most fun (unless you have tons of luggage!!) Be aware that there is no lift available - but help with cases is available from recption.
The staff are friendly and helpful, the food of an excellent standard for the area and the prices are acceptable.
