"As a Kiwi I'm used to a laid back lifestyle, and the weekend I spent in Newquay with my then new boyfriend was cool cos it totally reminded me of home. We drove down and arrived pretty early in the morning, parked in a car park and went for a walk. The place was deserted and so it felt nice and romantic, walking along the beach and looking at the scenery. Then we had a bit of a sleep in the car (not a highlight) before taking in the town. The shops are pretty tacky and touristy (which I thought was a good thing), and I enjoyed the fact that people were just taking their time, and that wearing shoes wasn't expected! There's even a museum that has things like 2 headed sheep in it. We had an awesome time on some hired boogie boards, the sea was a bit cold so we were glad we'd gotten wetsuits too. There were also surf boards to hire as well as surf classes, but they involved a bit too much running for my liking! After being told off twice for not being between the flags, we headed back (a bit late for the end of our hire time, but we didn't have watches!) That night we had a few drinks, the bars are pretty cool, and there were a lot of stag/hen dos there, so a good atmosphere. We stayed that night in a £70+ room, cos all the backpackers and B&Bs were full, so I'd recommend booking before you go. The next day we headed home via the Eden Project, which I was excited about as I'd read an article about it on the plane on my flight over to the UK from New Zealand. It was pretty awesome, and very hot and sweaty! All in all a brilliant weekend - especially as I'm still with the same guy a year later!"

This is a very useful read. Me and my family are going south west next month. Is there any chance you can tell us about any other beaches in the area? Somebody mentioned a beach with a stream running down is with fresh water. Something bay? All experiences for Newquay are priceless for me. Thanks all!

Newquays Fistral beach is great for surfing, but during the summer months, I would definatlly reccommend Perranporth (10 miles away) for beaching!

Thanks for that. Sounds nice. I stayed in Newquay in August and the water was suprisingly warm. On most beaches you can hire wetsuits anyway so the less tough amongst us. lol.

The beaches at home can differ, some are sand, some are rock but you can swim in pretty much all of them - my local one is a sand beach that's pretty good for surfing (apparently.) We have bigger sand dunes and the water always seems miles from where you park - also, you can swim before breakfast without a wetsuit at home in summer! Um, the beaches in Cornwall were much more crowded and the lifeguards had big cars with loudspeakers on them to holler at us to get back in the flags... you don't get that at home! I liked the beach at Newquey though, we went late June, so I don't know if it would get warmer a bit further into summer.

Just wondered how the beaches in Newquay compare to the New Zealand ones? I know there's some pretty amazing beaches around cornwall.
