"Pennyblacks is an extremely popular bar in the immensley classy Mailbox located in the heart of the bustling city of Birmingham. It is situated with canal front views which are spectacular in the summer and although it is usually classed as a bar you could also just call it a restaurant or a pub as it acts as all three.
When you walk into Pennyblacks you immediately notice how spacious and airy it looks with its mix of wooden and leather chairs and sofas and then a mix of high and low tables so if you are in the mood for a quick drink or a leisurely meal then it is here you can do both. The bar stretches almost the entire length of Pennyblacks and considering it is quite a long places you do get served quite quickly as there are about four people behind the bar most times of the day. At the very back of Pennyblacks you will see what looks like a wine tasting area as there are wines in shelving untis which reach the ceiling and some circular tables with chairs around them. As you walk to the back of the bar you find the toilets which are always immaculately clean and always have toilet roll. I know it seems strange talking about the toilets but they look very classy and the hand basins are great big sparkling white bowls which look amazing. There are a lot of toilets so I have never had to queue. Back to the main room and most of the time you will be able to get a seat but if you are going at a popular time if you phone them up then they can get some reserved for you which is what we did yesterday for the world cup game. All of the staff are friendly and attempt to cater to every single one of everybody's needs which is great and lets you know you are in a place that truly does look after it's customer. With respect to drinks they serve almost everything here including soft drinks, spirits, beers, wines and cocktails and even if it is not on the menu and you know how to make something then they will do it for you. The prices of the drinks to be honest are quite expensive at about £3.50 for a pint. I know it sounds a bit steep but the atmosphere and location and overall experience of the bar is worth it. With regards to food it is absolutely gorgeous. They have not got an amazing amount of choice but they do have meals for meat eaters and vegetarians and again if you want something sometimes they will make it for you even if it is not on the menu. The portions are huge though so be careful your eyes do not get too big for your belly. There is music played in the bar but it is quite quiet so you can easily hear everybody you are with and because of the variation on tables and chairs you can usually find a table where you can see everybody too which is a great advantage when you are out with a big group. Another thing worth mentioning is that if you are staying in there for a long time then you are able to keep a tab behind the bar and just pay the total in full at the end which saves you have to keep getting you wallet out. In conclusion though i would recommend this place to everybody. It has become a firm favourite at my work who go there almost every day and I think it has a prime location in one of the nicest spots in Birmingham. Well worth the money. Thanks for reading. xxx" | |
