"One of my favourite places for Sunday lunch is The Old Mill in Northfield, Birmingham. This pub is primarily known for its fantastic live music on Saturday nights, and also for the various pool competitions held throughout the year.
The atmosphere in The Old Mill is always brilliant; its clientele mainly consists of local residents of all ages and as it admits children until 9pm there's a real family environment. At weekends the pub attracts groups of younger people who tend to pop in for a few drinks before heading into Town, this time is very busy and can get loud so I wouldn't advise bringing kids to this pub at the weekend.
On Sundays, the roast is available between the times of 12noon and 2.30pm and you can choose from either Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding or a Turkey & Stuffing roast. Without fail, the meals are fantastic. It always surprises me how good the Sunday lunches are as The Old Mill has a very basic menu during the week with the food being good but uninspired. On a Sunday this completely changes, with the roast lunch being served with all the trimmings and always cooked to perfection. The meat is always tender without being dry (even the turkey!), roast potatoes are fresh and not swimming in grease, the boiled spuds are fluffy and delicious and even the veg is cooked beautifully, retaining it's crispiness and taste. The best thing about the meal is, however, the gravy. It's deliciously rich with a real meaty flavour.
To finish off your Sunday lunch there's a small dessert menu consisting of ice cream, gateaux and hot apple pie with custard. The apple pie really is worth going for; it has a fantastic cinnamon flavour and the pastry is the lightest I've tasted in years.
During the week the menu is basically burgers and sandwiches, although they do a fantastic jacket potato with chilli con carne and a salad for the bargain price of £2.30. I've never been disappointed with any meal from The Old Mill, even their baguettes are as good as any you can buy from the bakery.
Because the pub is basically a drinking establishment which serves food (as opposed to a pub restaurant) there's no specific section for diners, you eat where you're drinking. This isn't a problem though because the pub is so large inside that it's easy to find a table where you'll also be comfortable while eating.
The Old Mill serves all the standard drinks; lagers available include Carling, Kronenbourg and Fosters, while all the top name branded spirits are available at reasonable prices. They serve a very tasty coffee after you've eaten lunch, which is very good quality and will be served to your exact specifications.
Music adds to the atmosphere in The Old Mill, if one of the very many live bands isn't playing at the time of your visit then the jukebox will be on at a comfortable level to still have a chat while listening to the music. Staff are very efficient in The Old Mill, even in the very busy times the wait at the bar is usually no longer than a couple of minutes.
The pub is fully accessible to disabled visitors and families with pushchairs and there's a huge amount of space between the tables and The Old Mill is all on one level, making it easy for anyone with mobility problems to get around.
Sunday Lunch costs £4.95 and you really do get a lot for your money, I usually have the beef and by the time they've added the Yorkshire pudding my plate is literally overflowing. We usually spend around £20 when we visit on a Sunday, which is cheap at half the price when you consider we're have a full roast dinner AND drinks for this!
There's a large car park both in front and outside The Old Mill, with several designated disabled parking spaces near the entrance. To find the pub by car drive through Birmingham along the A38 Bristol Road to Northfield, turn left along Quarry Lane and left again onto West Heath Road. The pub is located on the corner of West Heath Road and Abbeydale Road.
Alternatively, you can catch the train from Birmingham New Street into Northfield Station and The Old Mill is roughly a one minute walk across the road – you can practically see the pub from the station, it's so close! Buses along this quiet road are erratic to say the least, but if you're planning to use this method of transport then I'd suggest catching either the 61 or 62 into Northfield High Street and then grabbing a 35 to the end of West Heath Road.
