"Explore Oxford by Bus! This is a “must do” when visiting Oxford. Even as an Oxford student myself, I really wanted to go on this tour and was glad I did – the commentary gave lots of interesting bits of trivia as well as just explaining what you are looking at - such as that Carfax tower was lowered 20 foot when townsfolk began throwing lumps of rock down on passing students, or famous people who went to different colleges. Brasenose alumni include Michael Palin, David Cameron and the inventor of bottled beer for instance!
Hop on the distinctive red busses with pictures of famous landmarks at any one of 20 stops around the city, including at the train station, to see colleges, towers, famous landmarks, gardens, places of historical interest in beautiful University City of Oxford. See the places written about by Phillip Pullman, in Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland, Inspector Morse and others.
Tickets cost £8.50 for students and OAPs, £9.50 for adults, £4.50 for children, £24 family, discount for groups of 10+.
Included in the price: Headphones to listen to live guide or recorded guide in 11 languages, including English; Children's pack with felt tip pens etc; rain coat if its raining; map; discounts for various Oxford attractions.
Tour takes around 1 hour if you stay on the bus, which I did, but you are free to hop on and off the bus throughout the day. Best on a sunny day when you can sit on the open top deck for good photo opportunities, or sit on the lower deck if it is raining. IMPORTANT TIP: I realised looking through my photographs that the best views were on the right hand side of the bus, so sit on the right if possible.
