"The Man in the Moon in South Birmingham was one of my old stomping grounds when I first discovered alcohol so it was nostalgia more than anything which drew me here yesterday, fifteen years later.

We popped in for a couple of drinks before going back home to watch the England match, and it seemed loads of people had had that very same idea because when we arrived at 1pm the place was literally heaving with people. This is probably more to do with the ultra massive screen which would be showing the match later on that afternoon, although several groups left before the footie started.

This is one of those pubs which looks better inside than you'd expect from the exterior of the building. The décor is light and airy; because The Man on the Moon is a large building there is plenty of room to manoeuvre between tables. The only problem space wise is having to squeeze past the pool table in order to get to the loo!

While this pub serves some very good pub food, this is primarily a drinking pub and there aren't many people eating at any one time. They serve a selection of steak dishes, mixed grills, burgers, baguettes and bar snacks which are all reasonably priced – and judging by the old fella eating next to me, the portion sizes are huge and the food looks delicious.

Every Tuesday they hold a 'Curry & A Pint' night where for £4.99 you get a homemade curry with rice and a pint of Carling. They've been running this promotion for donkey's years and it's always been really successful, when I asked the barman about it yesterday he said the pub is always very busy that night and in the years they've been holding the curry night there's never been a complaint about the food! Which is great in these days of mass produced pub food rubbish.

The atmosphere in The Man on the Moon is, and always has been, brilliant. It's always attracted groups of youngish blokes which makes for a fun, if not rowdy, youthful pub. Saying this, many local residents of all ages will visit the pub and everyone seems to mix in nicely together.

There's the usual selection of drinks at the bar; a large selection of draught and bottled lagers, spirits, wine and alcopops are all readily available along with several ales and ciders. They stock the fabulous Carling Extra Cold which is wonderfully refreshing on a hot day like yesterday. All beers are very reasonably priced, with lagers being around the £1.92 mark for a pint – much more pocket friendly that the £2.96 a pint I paid in Town on Saturday night!

Access for disabled visitors is great. The large car park at the front of the pub means you can park as close to the entrance as you need to and The Man on the Moon is completely on the level, meaning visitors with mobility problems haven't got any steps or uneven ground to navigate.

Will I come again? Damn right I will. We only stayed for a couple of hours yesterday but I could have stopped here all night; the atmosphere is fantastic, drinks are cheap and the World Cup is being shown on massive screens. What more could you want?

Finding The Man on the Moon is a piece of proverbial. Simply head out of Birmingham City Centre on the A38 Bristol Road and follow this to the (now a ghost town) Rover works at Longbridge. Turn left at the main traffic lights onto Longbridge Lane and drive as far as you can go, coming to an island at the very end of the road. Turn left at this island and you're on Redditch Road, The Man on the Moon is roughly ½ a mile down on your left hand side.

Alternatively you can catch the 35 and 45 buses from Birmingham City Centre's Corporation Street which will drop you opposite the pub, a one minute walk away. The closest train station is Northfield, although this is quite a long way away and you'll really need to catch a taxi to The Man on the Moon which will cost you around a fiver.
