"Tonight, on an impromptu night out with my mate, I ended up in the Beaufort Arms, a local John Barras pub which serves food and (more importantly on a girls night out) drink.

The pub is set out as one long room with a bar type area at one end and a larger dining section at the other. It's nicely decorated with light and airy wallpaper and comfortable seating throughout; there are some lovely prints on the wall which lend a tasteful atmosphere to the interior.

The dining layout is great; tables are well spaced with plenty of room between seats so you're not bumping into other diners on your way to the toilets or bar. There are table sizes to suit anything from couples to families of eight; we sat at a table big enough for four which was ideal as the tables for two looked very small. Cutlery and menu's are ready on the table when you sit down so no beckoning staff members when you're ready to pick your food.

I ate Wholetail Whitby Breaded Scampi which was served with chips, peas, grilled tomatoes and a small side salad. My meal was delicious; the scampi and chips were free from excess grease while the scampi still retained its moisture and crispy coating. My friend ate a Chicken Burger with Cheddar Cheese, this was served with chips, lettuce, tomatoes and coleslaw. The burger itself was moist and well cooked, served on a soft fresh white sesame seed bun. Sarah commented that the meal was brilliant, and even said it was better than a Burger King – which is praise indeed coming from the woman who will catch a bus to our local BK when she fancies one!

I had a fabulous dessert, if you've ever in the Beaufort Arms then try a Hot Jaffa Sponge. This is a series of warm chocolate and orange sponge cakes smothered in chocolate sauce with custard. Wow, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The sponge was light and the chocolate sauce was rich, it was seriously gorgeous – at £2.95 it's worth every penny.

To accompany our meals we drank from the pubs extensive choice of spirits. The Beaufort Arms stocks all the big brand spirits and a lot of smaller brands too, at reasonable prices. Tonight they were running a promotion where if you bought a double the mixer was free; of course I took them up on this offer… several times… Our spirits were served at the correct temperature with ice and we were asked how much mixer we'd like to top up the drinks – a novelty as I've noticed the trend just lately is to give you a splash of mixer and wait for you to ask for more.

Also available is a good wine menu at brilliant prices per bottle compared to other local pubs, draught and bottled lagers including Fosters and Carlsberg and a variety of ales. Your usual alcopops are available, as are soft drinks and coffee.

The Beaufort Arms run a permanent promotion where you can buy two selected meals for £7 all day between Monday and Thursday. Unfortunately we missed this by one day (we visited on Friday) but a quick scan of the menu told me the choices are pretty good and include lasagne and Chicken Tikka.

We were in this pub for around three hours and spent roughly £50 between us, including drinks and our meals. The food prices range from £5.95 to £8.75 which is brilliant considering the portion sizes are huge and the food delicious. A good range of starters and side orders are available, I particularly liked the look of the prawn cocktail which the lady at the next table ate and I'll definitely have one next time I'm eating here.

Access to wheelchair users is brilliant. Doors are wide and the space between tables and seats means visitors with mobility problems can easily manoeuvre around the pub. There are no steps at all to navigate and the large car park which runs both behind and alongside the pub means you can always get a parking space near to the entrance.

To find the Beaufort Arms by car you need to get yourself into The Scott Arms Shopping Centre in Great Barr, here turn left along the dual carriageway. Roughly half a mile down this road you'll see a large junction on the right, get into the filter lane and do a sharp right along B4124 Old Walsall Road – it looks like you can't legally do a right, but you can I promise! The Beaufort Arms is a two minute drive along this road on the left, past a row of shops. Incidentally, this row of shops includes a taxi office so instead of finding a designated driver just go halves on the taxi fare for a more fun night for everyone.

Right next door is Hampstead Train Station so you can grab a train from either New Street Station in Birmingham City Centre or Lichfield at the other end. There are several buses from Perry Barr and Great Barr which you can catch, although it's one of those places which isn't straightforward to find so be prepared for a long bus ride.
