"While in Weymouth, if you're looking for a gift with a difference then head no further than a gorgeous little shop in the Brewers Quay area called the Wooden Heart Co.
I was pottering about while waiting for my partner to eat his breakfast (I'm not a morning person and the smell of bacon fat was making me feel decidedly sick) when I noticed this shop, and immediately went in to have a mooch. The Wooden Heart Co. sells a range of hand crafted goods as well as supplies for all you crafters out there, having no crafter talent whatsoever I was looking at the ready made stuff.
And there's lots of it. The first thing I saw as I entered the shop was a lady behind the counter making tiny Fimo animals which, she explained, would be baked as soon as she'd added the eyes and available for purchase within the hour. These animals are absolutely gorgeous; costing between £1 and £2 each depending on the size and style you choose. The lady making them was happy to answer the questions I had about the various items and I could tell she loved her work.
A lot of the stock sold at the Wooden Heart Co. is old fashioned (in a good way) wooden crafted items which are fantastically cute and traditional. In particular I loved the selection of wooden plaques available in the shop; each with either an amusing message such as 'My house was clean last week… sorry you missed it' or a more heartfelt motto like 'If Mother's were flowers I'd pick you'. Ahhhhh.
I chose a couple of plaques including one personalised with my young daughters name, this one's actually very cool as the plaque has two wooden clothes pegs attached for me to peg up one of Alice's drawings. It's emblazoned with the motto 'Alice's Masterpiece' and is such a lovely addition to my kitchen wall. All the plaques in the Wooden Heart Co. are priced around the £5 mark which is a bargain when you consider how damned pretty they are.
Also available are Christmas ornaments made from tin, fridge magnets, teapot stands and a nice selection of paintings both with and without frames. Prices are pretty good throughout the shop with small souvenirs costing from just £1 and larger home decoration products priced at anything from £4 up to over forty quid for a very pretty decorated mirror which I had my eye on. To give you an idea of prices I bought two plaques, a bag of assorted glass beads and three pebble creatures and my bill came to £15 which I thought was a bargain considering how unusual the items are which chose. Oh, a pebble creature, for those of you not in the know, is a cleaned up Weymouth pebble with a small glow in the dark Fimo 'creature' sitting on the top. Very cute.
As well as the ready made goods, the selection of craft materials is fantastic. One section of the shop is dedicated to beads, string, magnets and everything you could need to create your very own souvenir of your break in Weymouth. Again, prices are reasonable. To be honest, I'm not up on the cost of craft materials but the Wooden Heart Co. seemed to have low(ish) prices on practically everything.
If you fancy checking out this lovely shop for yourself then pop along to the Brewers Quay development near the Old Harbour, it's perfect for nick nacks not only for friends and family but also if you're looking for something to brighten up your house. The Wooden Heart Co. is fully accessible to disabled visitors, as is the entire Brewers Quay complex, thanks to the wide doorways and ramped area where stairs would ordinarily be located. The aisles in this shop are very wide so there's plenty of room to move inside – my partners uncle who I visited with was using a disabled scooter and there was loads of room for him to get around, likewise pushchairs are just as simple to manoeuvre inside although a lot of the stock is breakable so watch little hands don't pull things off the shelves!
Finding the Brewers Quay complex is simple if you're already in Weymouth. Walk along the beach until you get to the Old Harbour, cross the raising bridge at the end and Brewers Quay is laid back around 200 yards down the narrow path on your right. The Wooden Heart Co. is inside, well signposted from the entrance by way of the 'Quay Map' inside the main doors. You can't miss it anyway as the windows are packed with gorgeous craft goods, and even if you're not intending to buy anything I guarantee you'll not leave this shop empty handed!
