"Doncaster, the place where I live and was brought up in, has to be one of the best places I know for bargain hunting. Along with all the millions of pound shops there are discount warehouses, markets, clearance shops and many other alladins cave type emporiums. Childrens Needs is another bargain shop which I have visited on tons of different occasions.
Childrens Needs is situated just outside Doncaster town centre at the other side of the huge outdoor market. I came across this shop by chance as I was walking into town and happened to pass by it, if I didn't practically bump into this place I would never have known of the existence of it. I wanted to tell people about Childrens Needs so they too could have a browse through their bulging shelves and pick up all those bargains that are on offer day-in day-out.
Childrens Needs kind of jumps out at you. It can be found right on the corner of Netherhall Road just near Fox's Music. It is an independant store which will probably be expanding at some point in the future because of its popularity. The outside of the shop has a huge Childrens Needs sign painted in bright yellow and orange which is easy to spot so long as you are looking for it. They provide customer parking for up to 7 cars which may not seem a lot but there are also the side streets where you can park for free. The reason it is so easy to be oblivious of this store is because those people visiting Doncaster for a shopping trip don't tend to venture outside the town centre, but for a five minute walk out of their way it is definitely worth it.
What is Childrens Needs?
**********************************
Childrens Needs is an independant shop situated just outside Doncaster town centre. At first glance the outside of the shop appears to look very small but
once you step foot inside the door it turns into a tardis. They sell many items relating to babies and toddlers at knock-down discount prices. The goods they sell are from warehouses which deal in seconds, last season stock and end of lines. Amongst the goods I have purchased were brands from BHS, Toys R Us and Woolworths. As it is a small independant shop the person who runs it tends to always remember the same faces when they go for return visits so you really do feel like a valued customer.
What do they sell?
************************
The stock is of a suprisingly wide variety for such a small place to have. Firstly when you walk through the door you are met with shelves and rails bulging with baby clothes. The baby clothes are very good quality and much cheaper than a lot of their competition. You can buy jumpsuits for as little as 99p (named brands), vests for 50p, bibs for as little as 20p, jumpers, shirts, hats, the list could go on forever. The age range for the clothes is also one reason why I used to shop here so much. My little boy was born premature and finding clothes to fit him at reasonably cheap prices was a nightmare. Childrens Needs usually have a variety of premature clothing on offer, again with very cheap prices.
Walking a bit further down the shop you come to the prams and pushchairs. Now for such a small shop it is incredible that they can cram even a couple in let alone about 10 - 15. The prams and pushchairs range from approximately 20.00 - 150.00. Makes which are available include Graco Mamas and Papas, Toys R Us.
In the window display of the shop are the highhairs, moses baskets, bouncing cradles, swings and anything else they have managed to pick up from the warehouse which won't fit into the shop itself.
Towards the back of the shop you can find
a couple of cots/cot beds which they use primarily for display purposes. The majority of the cots are away from sight in the back store room which they will show you upon request. The owners of the shop are also nice enough to order a cot/cot bed in if they haven't one suit able for what you are looking for. This is what we did, they ordered one for us to our specifications.
Other things available include practically anything you can think of that is required for a baby. Lotions, nappies, nursery storage, nappy changing benches, toys, medicines.
What have I bought here?
********************************
After our house fire (there I go again) we had to purchase everything new again. Our favourite purchase by far has to be a baby rocking chair which cost 18.99 and is the Tots R Us brand. So far this chair has lasted nearly 2 years without fading, ripping or breaking. This would have cost in excess of 40.00 had we bought it from Toys R Us itself.
We ordered a cot bed at a price of 79.99 which is made out of solid pine. The matress which we chose to go with it cost a mere 19.99 for the deluxe version. So for less than 100.00 we have a bed for my son for the next 4 years, now that is a bargain in my eyes.
Clothes. We have bought tons of clothes from before my Son was born up until the present day from here. They grow out of things that fast that there isn't much point spending a fortune on each purchase.
I purchased a car seat for my mothers car for 29.99. The car seat is suitable from birth to approximately 4 years and is a Britax one. Britax are probably the best make of car seats and can cost upto and over 100.00 so 29.99 was more than good value.
We bought a pushchair the day after the housefire as we needed one instantly. The one we chose cost 30.00 and sat in 3 d
ifferent positions, had a rain mac and a basket underneath. Fantastic value and it lasted for ages before we decided to give it to our friend and purchase a buggy instead.
And the disadvantages are?
***********************************
You take your luck really. The stock in Childrens Needs depends on the stock available in the warehouses at the time. I have to admit tha t sometimes the clothing range has been a little poor but it's what is to be expected in a discount shop. I have never been disappointed at what they have available stock wise, but then I go to Childrens Needs to find bargains mainly rather than look for anything specific.
Do they deliver?
********************
Yes they do deliver and it's free. (so long as you don't live too far away) We had the cotbed delivered at the time we specified, the delivery man even set the bed up for us and showed my Hubby how to alter the height for future reference. Now that is service.
Would I recommend them?
**********************************
Yes of course I would. In fact i've recommended them to people who I know already and they have also been completely satisfied with all the goods bought and the service they were dealt. My friend bought a pine rocking cradle for 79.99 when it would have cost her well over 100.00 anywhere else. They also delivered it for her (she lives 10 miles away) and now she shops there all the time. What more could you want? Great choices at cheap prices with a fantastic service. This independant store puts all the nationwide big guns to shame. Lets just hope that if Childrens Needs expands it doesn't lose the one to one service it gives to its customers now."
