"While visiting my sister in Northampton we took a wrong turning and ended up looking at the A-Z in The Spinney Hill pub car park, so we decided to have a bite to eat while we were there.
The Spinney Hill is a large pub/restaurant located on the Kettering Road in Northampton; it has a big dining area (sectioned into smoking and non smoking) and also a lovely beer garden for when the weather is good. The beer garden incorporates a great kids play area which has monkey bars and a slide, this kept the kids' amused while we were waiting for our meals to be served. We decided to eat outside, but a quick look around the interior showed me this place is clean with plenty of room to move about inside. It was pretty busy during our visit (a Friday lunchtime) with very few tables available. Despite the business, staff were extremely efficient and quick when serving drinks and taking food orders. One of the main reasons for deciding to eat our lunch here was the fact that The Spinney Hill has a long running promotion of two meals for £6.95. We visited with our children and as they'd been sitting in the car for such a long time I decided to treat them to their own meals rather than having them share off our plates – I'm not tight, it's just that our kids' eat like sparrows so a full meal is usually a total waste of money! Me and the kids all went for the Giant Yorkie with Sausages and Mash, while Mark ordered New York Chicken Breast. We all commented on how good the food was. Our Yorkie's were crisp, filled with three excellent quality port & leek sausages. The sausages had a homemade flavour to them; I suspect that even if they're not made at The Spinney Hill then they'll come from a local traditional butcher. The mash was buttery and wonderfully fluffy, while the gravy was rich and meaty – the perfect accompaniment to such a crispy Yorkshire pudding. A lovely stodgy country-style dish. The kids devoured every single scrap of theirs – even my ultra picky ten year old carried on eating after I'd told her the 'green bits' in the sausage was leek! Marks New York Chicken Breast looked fantastic. A huge breast of chicken topped with slices of crispy bacon and melted cheese, the while thing had a rich hot BBQ sauce drizzled over it. I tasted a bite and the chicken melted in my mouth and it had a gorgeous combination of flavours. This was a massive meal, served with a pile of chunky chips, peas and a salad. After our meals we treated ourselves to a delicious Toffee Chocolate Crunchie Sundae; generous scoops of chocolate and vanilla ice cream topped with chopped nuts and a sticky toffee sauce, finished with sugar wafers and a sprinking of Cadburys Crunchie Nuggets. Delicious. This lavish dessert cost just £2.25 and was worth every penny. The usual side orders are available at reasonable prices; garlic bread, chips, bacon, chicken wings although if all their meals are as huge as the ones we ate I doubt you'll have room for side dishes! Service is brilliant, our meals were served quickly and staff checked back at various times throughout the meal to see if we wanted more drinks and that the food was ok. To wash your meal down you'll need something long and cold. The Spinney Hill serves a good range of bottled and draught lagers and beer including Carling, Fosters, Guinness, John Smiths and Kronenbourg. Prices are reasonable compared to many Northampton pubs with beers starting at just £1.85 a pint. All the usual branded spirits are available and are, again, very nicely priced with selected doubles being on a long term promotion of £2.10. There's a basic selection of house wines costing between a fiver and £8 a bottle, cheap wines but the bottle of Ernest & Gallo we had with our meal was very good. We spent around an hour an a half in The Spinney Hill and this cost us £25 as we took advantage of their two-for-£6.95 offer. This price included meals, dessert, wine and drinks for the kids – I'd definitely say it was worth every penny as the food was delicious, plentiful with the added bonus of being able to treat the kids too. The Spinney Hill is fully accessible to disabled visitors, with several designated disabled parking zones in the large car park. The doorways are wide and the interior is spacious with plenty of room between tables, meaning there is plenty of room for wheelchair users to get around. To find this lovely pub from Northampton Town Centre, follow the clearly placed signs for Kettering, which will lead you onto the Kettering Road (A5123). The Spinney Hill is located just past the large Morrisons supermarket on your right hand side. It's roughly a ten minute drive from the Town Centre, even allowing for Northampton's frustrating use of one way streets!
