The Gardens and Grounds at Traquair include over 100 acres of woodlands with trails around the house, lawns and a modern maze. There are no formal gardens but a walled garden where you can relax by the fountain and Cupid's garden which is very romantic. You can also find a Croquet Lawn and a croquet set can be provided on request. The Bear Gates were installed in 1738 and closed after six years and will only be opened when the next Stuart king is crowned in London.
The area is rich in wildlife with birdlife, insects, deer, otters and small mammals can be found. Peacocks, ducks, swans and rare poultry breeds can be found around the grounds as well as cashmere goats, ponies and King Charles Spaniels staying in the house.
The grounds at Traquair are child friendly with acres for them to run around and the Maze which is one of the largest hedged mazes in Scotland with ¼ mile to the centre. 6000 mini eggs are planted for the annual Easter Egg Hunt for the under 10s. There's a mini adventure playground at the rear of the house suitable for all ages and toddlers' play area, swings and play house. Willow tunnels were added in 2005 with a yew sound sculpture. For bug hunters and pond dippers the Go Wild programme offers lots of fun with scavenger hunts and activity sheets available in the Gift Shop.
Every year the family can enjoy the many events held at Traquair House including the Medieval Fayre, Traquair Fair, Historical Ghost Tours, Halloween Experience and free Christmas opening.
Traquair House Brewery originally dates back to the 18th century until 1965 when the equipment was rediscovered. Today the brewery produces 600-700 barrels per annum of Traquair House Ale, Traquair Jacobite Ale and Traquair Bear Ale with additional ales produced for special occasions.

Originally a hunting lodge, Traquair welcomes visitors from all over the world to the oldest inhabited and most romantic house in Scotland. Built in 1107 the house has been visited by 27 Kings and Queens and today offers variety of things to see and do as well as Bed and Breakfast accommodation in South East Scotland.
Traquair offers the perfect place to stay with three large double bedrooms: The Blue and White Rooms in the 18th Century wing and the Pink Room in the older part of the house each decorated with antique furniture, canopied beds, private bathrooms and central heating. It is ideal for a romantic honeymoon break with complimentary bottle of Traquair's French sparkling wine.
In the morning you can enjoy a delicious full Scottish breakfast served in the Still Room. Dinner may also be available by prior arrangement but you will find many places to dine from country inns to 5 star hotels in the area.
The 1745 Cottage Restaurant can be found in the old walled garden serving delicious home made soups and lunches with mouth watering scones and home baking on offer. Seating up to 50 people indoors and more out on the patio and garden it is perfect on a sunny day and great for the children to run around.
Guests are very welcome to explore the grounds to the River Tweed and fish on our private stretch of the river. Take a tour of the house and see the portraits and maps of the house, High Drawing Room and bedrooms – The Kings Room has Mary Queen of Scots' bed and her son James cradle. There's a Museum which dates from the 14th century with very rare wall paintings and Library with around 3000 books.
Weddings:
With a Catholic chapel and licensed for civil ceremonies you can enjoy a romantic wedding in the house or grounds. The unique setting provides a perfect backdrop and ideal for intimate receptions with marquee at the front of the house, in the walled garden or held in the main house. The chapel, Dining Room and High Drawing Room will seat up to 50, The Lower Drawing Room seating 8, the Yew Tree Circle for up to 20 or for a truly unique location, the Maze.
Small receptions of wedding meals for up to 8 and larger receptions for up to 50 can be arranged in the house with marquee for over 50 guests. All our food is homemade using the finest Scottish produce.
A full list of suppliers for all your needs will be provided when you confirm your wedding at Traquair. This list will include photographers, hairdressers, make up artist, stationers, wedding cars/horse drawn carriage, tiaras, fireworks and more. Dresses and kilts can also be hired locally.
Most individual needs can be catered to with a personal service. We are happy to discuss any requirements and requests you may have.
Corporate events:
If you are looking for a place to hold a business meeting or event, Traquair House has the perfect venue. The five unique meeting spaces seating up to 75 have all the facilities of a modern conference centre but also offer the very best customer service, delicious home cooked meals and you can start your day with a tour of the brewery or team building event.
The grounds offer a great location for activities and team building with mini highland games, falconry displays and team building games having taken place in the past. For informal lunches the walled garden is perfect for a barbeque with space for marquees and the garden can be hired. For team building activities the Maze is perfect for treasure hunts and more. Salmon fishing on the River Tweed can also be arranged. For activities that require a larger space, the 16 acre Avenue Field is perfect for clay pigeon shooting and quad biking.
