Holmhead is built on the foundations of Hadrian's Wall with stones from the Wall itself. There are two Roman inscribed stones which are visible today next to the kitchen door and the second in the wall of the Camping Barn. Your host Pauline is an expert on “The Wall History” and can help you plan your visit. Surrounding Holmhead are various forts, excavations and museums and the area outside Holmhead is rich in wildlife including salmon in the ford, heron, moorhens, sheep and cows.
For a day out you can visit the Northumbrian coast for the castles, farne islands and Holy Island. The North Pennines provides a great area to walk and cycle and the highest town in Britain at Alston. Newcastle, Carlisle, Edinburgh and Durham are within easy reach, the Lake District under an hour away and small neighbouring towns and villages full of history and things to see and do. Gateshead Metro offers fantastic shopping or folk nights at Hexham and Carlisle.

B&B / Guest House Description
The Guest House at Holmhead has 2 double and 2 twin bedded rooms all with shower, wash basin and toilet en-suite. There is plenty of storage space, hairdryer, armchair and radio with each room having picturesque views over the countryside. If you require a cot or extra bed they can be provided and hospitality tray on request or go next door into the lounge and make yourself a complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate or beef drink. The lounge has sofas grouped near the TV and others round the coffee table where you can get a drink from the small bar. Children will find a range of toys, jigsaws and board games while the adults can unwind in front of the living flame fire with the foot massager and listen to music or discover the history of the area from the library.
Breakfast can be ordered from 'The longest breakfast menu in the world' or enjoy a delicious evening meal – just let us if you have a special dietary requirements or dislikes and you can get to know the other guests in the family style setting.
The Cottage is a barn conversion offering self-catering accommodation for weekly lets sleeping 4 in 1 double 1 twin room. The fully equipped kitchen includes ceramic hob, microwave oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and washing machine with a tumble dryer also available. The lounge diner offers a great place to relax with coal effect fire, TV and hi-fi and French doors leading out onto the patio. The Cottage has disabled access, wide doors and bathroom equipped with bars, handrails and transfer platform. From the back door you can enter the private garden with views of the castle.
The Camping Barn is the perfect place to stay for backpackers on the Hadrian's Wall Path and Pennine Way Path which both pass the back garden gate. There are basic sleeping arrangements for up to 8, 4 in bunks and 4 on the bench, with sleeping bags available for hire if required. The Barn includes hot shower, toilet, and compact kitchen with camping gas stove, hot and cold water and cooking utensils. There's a dining table and seating area and the sleeping area is open plan with bench, bunk beds and mezzanine floor. Outside you'll find an outdoor shower and toilet, drying room and ample storage for cycles and space for 2 backpacker tents. The Barn doesn't have electric sockets but there is lighting. The Camping Barn is not open over winter as it is not heated.
